I had an Opinel about ten years ago but it's gone. I can't remember what happened to it to save my life. I probably gave it away but to whom?

Rotated back to Buck; this time it's a brand new one instead of a vintage one - the 301 I bought last week - first trip in my pocket today.

Opinel #8 (on the bottom).
Refinished the handle by sanding it down and apply copious amounts of Rit brown dye. Washed off the dye the next day with hot water, let it dry and then applied several coats of tung oil varnish.

1943 Colonial Navy Survival-4.5 inch Speer point blade---overall length 10 11/16 inces. Not sure if its the older Jiant made for Air force. From what I've found out the USAF knife had no bail or sheath.Anyway I was cutting a bolt with it this morning. And yeah I get a kick out of the responses I get when I break out my trusty Friend. Tomorrow maybe Imperial,Case day. Lets see what mood lingers in the a.m.. Hope my fellow enthusiasts enjoy.

Opinel #10 drop point, shown next to my Buck 110. The Opinel is lighter, pocketable and, frankly, tougher than the Buck (at least in terms of the lock up).

Gez Dave them Opinels are nice but I've been listening to ya all week, are ya sure the 110+112 are the ones loosening up I've work mine HARD for 37years and they have allways locked up tight and NEVER WOBBLED

Maybe the plastic handled one does. But tougher than a Buck

I have my thoughts on that maybe some people are lucky on some brands and not with others

anyway good luck with the Opinels glad they work out for ya

Anyway heres my work week EDC

Most of my bucks have some vertical play. My old 110 has none. The 500 has none but has been pampered. The 2 dot 112 has just a tick, better buck reset the lock bar. My newer ones all have noticeable play. Sitflyer on BF's Buck forum suggest the issue may be the smoother but softer brass bushing on the main pivot.
The Opinels lock takes any play out of the system when engaged. Ive treated them harder than my Bucks and just can't dent them. My heart is with Buck (and old Schrade) but dang, these Opinels are tough.
They are high maintance (must resist comparisons) and I wouldn't want to use for skinning game due to the plain wood.

Yea I've read your post over to BF I really can't compare the to because the Opinel just aren't my thing but I can say that for work( and I do work the.112. VERY hard) and for Hunting I been really blessed with my Bucks

Nod. They aren't mine either, at least not like Buck. I'm afraid that somewhere along the line Buck decided to make a smoother pivot by using softer material. Literally don't make em like they used to.
I bet they sell more this way.
How old is your newest 112?

I've been trying the two-knife-carry approach recently. One pocket has a K.R. Johnson trapper in it and the other has an MTech karambit. Karambits make great utility knives, which was their original purpose in Indonesia and the Philippines.

I'm carrying this old Boker,USA c,1970s and it is in great shape.Over the years it has been one of my favorite knives for EDC as long as you don't mind the size and weight. They made them to last and last they did.

Dave my hunting 112v is 1989 in due respect I don't work her anywhere as hard as my .112.

I have heard Buck had new pivot bushings do ya know what year they were installed on the 110+112???

Singing46, I love the looks of that knife. I have a soft spot for spear points.
Mike, good hunting!
Garddog, no, I don't know when they changed. I believe they went from solid pin to a bushing in the move from 2 dot to 3 dot 112s, hence the smoother action on the 3 dots. But, as I understand it (incompletely and based solely on what I've read in forums), at another point in time the bushings changed from steel to brass. BG42 (whose opinion I trust) favors the 3 dot 112s. My 2 dot (which I got used and abused) wobbles vertically. Buck told me it needed a reblade to fix it but I decided to keep the 440C original blade and live with the wobble. But it does wobble, just like all my newer Bucks do. Real pity for me. Al Buck's original message that came with my first 110 made me a fan for life. But....
Today, I'm carrying the #8, shown next to my 2 dot 112.
