I like it! The large trapper is a bit big for comfortable pocket carry unless I'm wearing cargo pants or bibs. So I thought I'd try a horizontal sheath this time and I've been very happy with it.

Guys, there are some awesome knive sfloating around here. Today, I've got a wedding to attend in the evening and t shirt printing in the a.m. I went small today, and packed my Case MOP peanut my wife gave me on our wedding day. Its my usual gentleman's knife, the church function, wedding event type of knife. I should carry it more. Those little peanuts can do a fair amount of work. Y'all have a blessed day!

Just an entire series of nice knives posted up there guys, very nice!
This is one of two NOS Schrade Old Timers I found at a gunshop this past Thursday, this one, a 77OT, had a little, light discoloration on the blades, one bolster, and in the shield (must have gotten damp sometime in the past). It was very light, but I cleaned it up this morning anyway (cannot abide rust - even light rust around the edge of the shield). Now that it isn't 100% perfect I think I may EDC it soon - never owned a Muskrat pattern knife before. OH

OH-
Educate me please, what makes it an imporved muskrat. I thought a standard muskrat carried two clip blades as shown, and an improved muskrat had one clip and a wharncliffe blade opposite it?
What am I missing?

Junebug - nice knife - the handles really stand out!
Knifetime - thanks - what appealed to me is that the knife is the same size as a 4" 8OT Stockman, but thinner enough that it's not as bulky in the pocket.
TAB - I don't know what makes it "improved" (I've never seen the "unimproved" model). This is my first Muskrat; I have stayed away from them (two identical blades on a knife have never appealed to me before) but I find NIB Old Timers on the shelf so seldom that I bought it anyway. As I handled it while cleaning it up it slowly dawned on me that it would be a good EDC and I might end up liking it! OH

I pulled out this old Case stainless that was my Grandad's to go to church today but it did not have an edge so the Colonial got the nod. It is sharp beyond belief.

Back to carrying my Opinels instead of my Bucks.
Two of my Bucks started to get some vertical play in them from using them for yard work (e.g. cutting finger sized junk on the property). Hoping that the repeated application of Vaseline (an old trick) will help control the swelling of the joint in wet weather. The Opinel 8 and 10 show absolutely no sign of loosening despite getting used harder than the Buck.
Funny...
When I think of hunting camp, my childhood and my kin, I think of Buck knives.
When I think about a knife I can beat on with impunity, I think of Opinel.

Dave, mostly because of you and your love for the opinels I recently got 2 of them a #6 and #9 and they are cool! I keep the #9 in my tool box and I fiddle around the house with the #6. I am really glad I bought them and the price is right a great value for quality of knife for sure!
I dont EDC them I still carry my GEC Outlaw but I do really like them.

Gino,
Like my dad said when I got put on the church board, "Congratulations and I'm sorry."
With no disrespect meant for our French and European readers, I'm pre-disposed to be gun shy about the Opinels for two reasons. First, I grew up with Bucks and Ulsters. Just did. Second, as a bike mechanic I found French bikes frustrating to deal with in the US due to fact that they adhered to different standards and parts availability was limited.
I find the Opinels to be really crude out of the box and definitely fiddly over the long haul. Need to keep working on the joint (vaseline is your friend) and smoothing out the lock ring. Hint, a large flat head screw driver carefully twisted will open up the inner joint ring and give a freer opening blade.
But dang it all... They are just so stubbornly durable and effective. They've overcome my (irrational) biases and have earned their spot in my pocket.
I'm really not sure to be happy or sad for you now that you're playing with them. They've definitely poked at my deepest emotions around knives. When heading out to do yard work, I look at my Bucks and look at my Opinels and my head and heart go in different directions.
Maybe I need to just admit that I'm more of a backpacker/skier than hunter and embrace the fact that so many tools of the trade for backpacking and skiing that I love are European including: Tua (Italian skis), Asnes (Norwegian skis). Asolo (Italian telemark boots), Rottefella (Norwegian bindings), Optimus/Svea (Swedish stoves), Trangia (Swedish stoves), Swix (Norwegian ski wax). My life would be horrible without these brands. Maybe I just need to mentally put Opinel in this group and just embrace it. There needs to be someway to make peace with this emotional split. When I hunt, it is still Johnson Woolens, Winchester and Buck. Maybe that's just the way I need to think about.
