This is one of those diamonds in the rough rare good deal type of finds that I stumble across every once in a blue moon that keeps me hopeful, on the hunt and in the game

Snagged this little swell-center jack in the shallows of the bay. Had planned to modify it with some new covers because I generally have an aversion to synthecic knife handles. But, when I got it in hand I found the Amber Winterbottom Delrin surprisingly appealing, so I think I'll keep it original as is. I am intrigued by the "Queen City" blade etch instead of "Queen Cutlery" or "Queen Steel" as I would expect to see on a 1990 knife. Seems slightly unusual as does the QCCC tang stamp on the pen blade pile side.

1990 Queen #56C Medium Coke Bottle Amber Winterbottom Delrin

I wanted to like that Amber Delrin...I really did. I tried to like it, tried real hard, but I just couldn't force a love I did not feel. I like everything else about that #56C, though, especially the swell center handle and rounded bolsters. So, I had BIGHEAD work his magic on it and switch out the Amber Winterbottom Delrin (AWD) for some Amber CSB. Now I LOVE it

Great transformation Q. I’m with you on disliking delrin, plus it will crack over time. That looks great with those new covers.

I’ll admit there are some synthetic handle materials that I like, mostly modern ones like Corelon and Kirinite, but I just can’t seem to drum up any passion for Delrin or Celluloid, although not for lack of trying.

Here’s another Queen knife I picked up recently that appears to have been rehandled in some kind of imitation stag material. It’s obviously been modified and had some blades deleted (I don’t believe Queen ever released a single blade Stockman) and I don’t think this is the original Queen City handle either.

Although I didn’t mind that imitation stag material too much, the fact that it was synthetic made it harder for me to fully appreciate. So, I had BIGHEAD give this one a makeover as well and I am very happy with the result

Your accumulating quite the BIGHEAD queen custom collection. Swell centers are my favorites. Great looking knives.

I wish I could find more info about this Sheffield jigged pearl, all I could find was that it was offered for a few years in the early 2000s ending in around 2006? Either way it's beautiful stuff, this one is a doctor's knife with a spatula secondary.

On firearms the same pattern is called “checkering”. Case used it a few years ago on bone covers on their large gunstock (30) and other patterns. They called it checkered jigged bone.

Those are great examples, I do really like checkered bone. Only example I have right now is from Rough Ryder (their 30th anniversary teardrop), definitely want more in the future. I'd only ever seen checkered pearl on fruit knives before seeing the Queen stuff, feels amazing in the hand.

in 2006 they made the Liner lock, smll stockman,senator, peanut and drs. knife in the sheffield pearl. the catalog shows the drs knife with a spatula, but they made some with a pen blade also. I dont know if in that same run or another year? I should have snagged some when they were selling at 80 bucks! I think that was the retail on the liner lock when new? Try searching the queen history archives, all catalogs are available there.

I don't think I remember seeing both the spatula and pen with the Sheffield pearl in the same catalog but I'd have to check again.

I wonder why they started and stopped doing the jigged pearl. Did they buy an old machine at auction or something? Or just decide it would be cool to do one day? And was it Bill Howard leaving that in some way caused it to stop (I think the timing lines up)? Would love these kinds of details, glad I managed to pick up an example at least.

Wow, that one doesn't appear to have ever been in someone's pocket!
My "go to" deer knife is from the same years and those imitation Winterbottom handles are as tough as nails. I've seen very few cracked or broken handles on Queens wearing those handles but sadly there seems to be a lot more cracked or missing pieces on the well used Queens with real Winterbottom bone.

I’m betting you get this one transformed eventually too Q. It’s a nice looking knife, but I’m in agreement with you about how hard it is to warm up to Delrin. I’ve seen way too many of them crack over the years.
Still, I like that pattern a lot. Fiddleback whittlers are one of my favorites.
