Interesting tang John.... Not one I have seen before.... Usually the word "Knife" on an Ulster would designate it as being made prior to the Baer acquisision, but would not be stamped "USA" as far as I know. Perhaps it is a transitional tang used by Baer shortly after the acquisition?
Nice blade etch.... I wonder what the "40" stands for?

Joe, That's a nice pearl jack. I have the same knife in pearl as well as one with bone handles. Both are 3 1/16" closed. The pearl has brass liners with nickel silver bolsters, and the bone one has steel liners and bolsters. Barry

Looking through a loupe I can see there was an etch on mine but can not read it.
It doesn't resemble yours.

Joe, I have seen many pearl Ulsters etched ULSTER BRAND in block letters. Maybe this is what yours has? I have a couple. The etch is legible, but to faint to photograph.

While I don't collect Ulster knives, I do collect the camper/scout pattern and picked up this old Ulster Scout knife to add to my collection at an antique mall recently. Real nice bone handles on this one! Very nice pics of Ulster knives here!!

I'm sure that particular Congress knife is The Top of the Line, Best Knife, Ulster Knife Co made. And it has been preserved in all it's original beauty without even one blemish.
I truly doubt there is a better Ulster Knife Co. knife in existence.

Thanks for the nice comments on the Ulster guys. The seller said that Ulster didn't make a lot of knives with ivory. He estimated it's age at 1930s or maybe even pre World War I, but after reading through this thread I see where the stamps don't really help with dating. Here are a couple more bad phone pics.

The master on this is stamped Rector & Wilhelmy Co. And the pen is stamped Ulster Knife Co. NY.Ivory handles and etched Clean Clipper.

Thank you Paul. My collecting strategy is loosely defined as trying to get one or two early, quality knives from American and English companies, although I do also collect Henckels.

Picked up this large Ulster Knife Co NY dogleg, large 3 3/4" heavy feel to it. Blades are close to full with faint blade etch and it has beautiful ebony handles.
