Thanks Johnnie. It's not really as bad as it looks. The blade is nearly full and there's no pitting on the blade just the typical black spotting you get with carbon steel blades. The worst are the bolsters, and I could clean those up with a little fine sandpaper, but I won't. It sure is a massive knife.

I do, and I'm guessing that it's too late for ol' Jess to grow up into a swan. I don't really find it so ugly. It's got a lot of beauty and character in an "old timey" sort of way.

I think both the Wolf and Crouch knives have a distinct "Back-Yard-Forge" quality to them.

I find them very attractive.

Tj, can you open the blade without breaking your thumbnail? Both the Wolf and Crouch tend to be a little on the stiff side. Great old solid knives.

Sure can, because there are no nail nicks. Since I've cleaned away years of filth and the blade has just a very little bit of oil on it, I have to barely wet my index finger and thumb, like you're turning a page in a book, then I can grasp and hold onto the blade, and the blade will pull right out.

This H'VILLE (Hotchkissville) knife is another that will challange the thumb nail

I hope you don't think I was putting your knife down. I was just remembering how they had been marketed.

I have a Chris Wolf but have never been able to snag a Jess Crouch. I would love to find one. You are a lucky duck!

I read that post too. I guess at the time when all the great knife makers were making all the great knives, it was an ugly duckling, in comparison. I am now on a search for the Chris Wolf. It seems the Wolf comes around more than the Crouch, or at least I've seen more of the Wolf.

I've never been a big Schrade fan......but I could easily be converted with some as nice as that.

Here is one my grandfather picked up at an estate auction. Wilbert Cutlery Co, Chicago. This knife was made by Napanoch Knife Co, N.Y. sometime between 1910 and 1920, and was sold through the Sears & Roebuck Catalog. In 1919, Napanoch was bought out by Winchester. It is said that Winchester admired the quality of the Napanoch knives so much, that they purchased the company in an attempt to raise the quality on their own knives.

Great looking matching green bone scales on this knife, no cracks on either side. The blades are a little rough, and looked to have been cleaned by someone at some point. But overall it is awesome for being nearly 100 years old. I love the long nail pull, and both blades still snap like a gator.
