All About Pocket Knives

Some REALLY nice whittlers being shown off here. I have always liked whittlers, but unfortunately I only have one, this 3 3/8" Nelson Knife Co. The back of the master blade is stamped Germany. (But not Solingen)

Wow, that's beautiful! I don't think I've ever seen a wood shadow pattern whittler before, and I've never heard of Nelson. That's a great find!

Thanks, I found it in a dollar junk box at the flea market a while back. The handles were gone and it had no bolsters, and looking at the liners, there were no holes for pinning the handles on. So it must have either been a tip bolster design or a shadow. I rehandled it as shadow with coca bola and is now an EDC. I also could not find out anything about Nelson Knife Co. Germany except in the Ritchie and Stewart collector book I have it just states Nelson Knife c1894. I find it hard to believe this was made c1894. Must be a different company. It is a neat little whittler.

Just realized that the only whittler I currently own is this Hen & Rooster. That's not good. Have to get more.

There are a lot of fine whittlers posted.

Here is a Hibbard Spencer Bartlett that I recently got. I do not know much about that brand though I gather that it was a hardware store that had knives made by various companies. This knife looks to me as if it came from the Olbertz factory in Germany, but I have not found any supporting or contradicting information.

When I was looking through an old thread on Hibbard Spencer Bartlett trying to find some info I did find a photo of the very knife that I now own. I guess us traditional knife lovers really are a small world!

Here's an old Robeson swell center, split back whittler. 622225 ..... 3 5/8"

Just for comparison sake, GEC 57, Case 6355 and Schatt and Morgen 43 1/2. The 57 is the smallest and the 431/2 slightly the largest. The Case is the smoothest. All 3 great knives.

Dogleg, never met a Wharncliffe whittler I didn't like. Three beauties, especially that Case bone. Nice seeing the size comparison instead of reading about it. Good info and nice knives.

Here's a Wostenholm Whittler with what I believe are dyed pressed stag or horn handles (if I remember Lyle's info it was horn?).. Blades have great hard snap, tight and the tolerance between blades is amazing - that Sheffield quality. The spine of the master blade is pretty cool - almost 3/16" thick at tang and tapers down to the point like an axe from top view .. It is still showing some original crocus polish on blades and very lightly sharpened… Nice wedged spring and no doubt a whittler that is a solid feeling knife! Hammered pins - I’m guessing early 1900s on date (maybe 1890s..)…

Last century Winchester. If I had to pick one knife only it would probably be a whittler. 3 blades, straight edge, curved edge, different options. If I had to pick one, but thankfully I don't. Much more fun to mix it up.

You got a good one there Ivoryman. Every thing perfect about that knife in my book. And great photo as well. Congrats.

I picked up this bone handled whittler over the weekend. It is marked A. W. Wadsworth & Son Germany. It has the usual whittler layout with the 3 blades and tapered back, but this one has a double sided file in place of one of the smaller pen blades. Also stamped on the back of the blades is a large X with the letters
X over L N over T stamped within the large X. Anyone familiar with what this means?

Ivoryman, those are such sweet looking S&M’s. Love those. I also am a big fan of Winchesters, so drooling over the Winchester whittler posted,nice.
