Just got back from my buddies place where we went on our annual doe hunt using muzzle loaders, we each got one and had a good time. Also trapped a nice bobcat as a bonus/. Terru

Big bodied does Terry - nice cat too! A buddy of mine had a full body mount of a cat a few years back - the cost of that mount would seriously hurt your feelings. OH

Good job! Being from the South, those gals seem to have some mighty big ears, I guess they are Mule deer, can't see their tails?
Muzzle loaders are a lot of fun.

I gave it up in 2006 after our deer camp broke up, and we bought the place in Arizona in 2010...
never missed a rifle opener in Michigan for 27 (I think) straight years
I was blessed with some good big woods and cedar swamps north country hunting spots over the years
only 3 years out of 27 I did not come home with one or two every year

thanks for the comments guys, yes they are mule deer, not too many whitetails in this part of the state. Al lives 20 miles south and about 5 miles east of North Platte. We hunted on a ranchers place just about 10 miles west of Maywood, he has lots of deer and a few elk on his place. We have been hunting in that area for about 15 years. It is full of cedar canyons and corn ground on top. This is in the same general area of the Duke Alexis buffalo hunt that I posted a few weeks ago (1872). Al has been a part-time taxidermist for about 45 years or more and has a full body mount of a bobcat in his trophy room. He just retired from the Ne. Fish and Game fisheries dept. so we will have lots of time for hunting and fishing in the future. (if our heath holds up) my knees are about shot! Terry

Looks like an outstanding day afield there terryl308. Two deer and a bonus bobcat with a oh-so-pretty pelt, I'm officially jealous. What I don't get though is how your dog is just laying there acting completely uninterested in that kitty in the picture.

sunknife, I noticed the dog, too. He's already checked the cat out and figured since he's already dead he won't be any fun. I also enjoyed snoopin' around the picture, horse halters, shed antlers, maybe and there might be a big ol' meat grinder on the bench. A bag of popcorn and a cup of coffee, way to end a hunt.

Thats a nice bobcat and deer. When l was a younker my uncle Homer killed a bobcat and had it mounted, l thought he and it was coolest thing I'd ever seen.

you guys really check out a picture! That old dog has seen it all and is really laid back to say the least. That shop is part of Al's taxidermy shop and where we grind up deer meat, make sausage and etc. (and tell lies and have a cool one after the hunt) thanks for the comments, we had fun. Terry

Had an idle day Thursday so I hit the woods for a little deer strolling.Was a bright and clear day with temps in the teens when I set out about 9:00am and a forecasted high of 29. Too cold for stand hunting so decided to check out an area of this public hunting ground that I hadn't explored much before. Got pretty far back into this 2500 acre property walking up and down steep ravines for 5 hours in a big loop. Had a tag in my pocket but luckily had no opportunity to shoot a deer. I say luckily because if I had taken a deer I most likely would have suffered a heart attack trying to get it back to the truck.
Took a few pics on a ridge top as I sat and had my meager lunch from my day pack. Was a good day but man did my legs ache from all that walking in heavy pack boots with about 35 lbs. of wool clothing on two keep warm.

Sure is a pretty block of woods to hunt in - what part of the country is that? OH

I'm in northern Illinois Old Hunter, the place I hunt is in along the IL river. I love the deer hunting, they grow big here and occasionally I get a chance to shoot at and miss one of those big boys. Nice mix of hardwood timber and steep ridges and ravines along the river as compared to most of the flat farmland in our state. Get to see some eagles there too which is still a treat to me since we never dreamed they would be here years ago when I was a kid roaming the woodlots.

Beautiful woods sunknife!!! Would love to spend some time in them!

I had an under layer on, but knew as soon as we got to work scavenging for wood, starting a fire, I'd be getting warm and I was right.
A couple times I reached for my sweat rag......and was irratated I didn't have it!

Wish I had had one of our grandsons with me this afternoon. The little 4 point that wouldn't come in close enough during Thanksgiving is hangin' in the Oak tree this evening. Meat for the freezer. Had to get Miss Joy's dog to find him, he got out of sight in the pines.

Scott - looks like another fun mission for those boys. I know what you mean about coming out of the thermals. I would leave the house with three layers and by lunch be down to just a shirt.
