All About Pocket Knives

A pair of old shatt & morgans. The little pen is actually from gowanda n.y.
I just wanted to show the size difference between the two knives. 2-3/8 to 5-1/4" on the hunter.

I wanted to post this latest acquisition for those that enjoy PA knives. This isn't a gorgeous bone or awesome pearl or even a cool pattern, but alas it is a PA knife, the billhead picture is additional proof for those that are sceptics.

The Disston company didn't make the knife, but they were steel buyers and produced saws and tools of many kinds. I see they were even in New South Wales. Must have been a large company. Notice the KEYSTONE shield on the handle. PA is the Keystone State, that goes back to the 13 original colonies, also notice the dates 1840 to 1940, clearly this is about 72 years old then. I like things like this, the billhead also indicates the 1840 incorporation date.

The knife is VERY tight and well made, just isn't exciting like others, but hey I like it and it is a PA KNIFE

A wood handled w.r. Case & sons cutlery co. Bradford pa.
And a rogers bone w.r.case & son bradford pa.

I wasnt going to show all three, but i kind-off like e'm.

Both tangs are stamped, hard too see and its correct!
But this old baby is sporting the case bros. Xx trademark out on the main and a case.bros. Shield!
I assume this is one of the early knives that stole the xx from case bros. Before they bought the patent?

This is a legal CASE BROS with the XX on the blade. Another one you probably will never see again. 4 3/8th english jack with fancy bolster.

I wished I had that Kane knife for that aritcle I did for KW. That looks to be VERY old.

The kane is a nice little knife. Has a couple of tight pin cracks but that about it.
I assume the handles are real tortoise shell. Does anybody know how to tell the difference between real tortoise and faux tortoise?

I question that the Brantford is from Bradford PA. I don't believe that is the CASE (no pun intended, OK I did intend it, but couldn't resist, but really, I don't think it is from Bradford)

Here is a PIC of a Beaver Falls Cutlery hunting/butcher knife. Just picked it up. Plain for sure and I don't usually buy fixed blade knives, but I couldn't pass this one up. Sorry about the bad pics, in a hurry and used the cell phone. At first I thought it was a trade knife, but I stand corrected.

Since there's no dot on the thread icon, I see I've never posted this Baldwin Senator in this thread. Picked it up at the local semi-annual flea market last fall (I think) for a couple of bucks.

Yep david you are right. The brantford isnt from bradford.
The tangs just say brantford cutlery co. For some reason i allways thought it was. Lol

Just when you thought you were safe from the onslaught of cutlery items from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, along comes old PA Knives with yet another example of outstanding quality edges and oddities from this area. Today we have an oddly stamped razor from Tidioute that bodes the question to us lovers of cutlery history, from whence did this fine piece of blade arise?

We know that the Brown name on cutlery actually started in the late 1800's. The current KaBar company could actually claim a much earlier starting date than 1898. The Brown Razor company was in the 1880's and then Brown Brothers right after that, and then Union Razor Little Valley then off to Tidioute. The Brown stamping was used up into the early 1900's in Little Valley, Tidioute and Olean. Tough stamps to find though.

This one tells me that it was after 1909 because it doesn't use the name Union Razor, just Union. The Brown's always used the name Union Razor up until that time. I date this razor between 1909 and 1912 due to the Union only name.

Saw the Platts on eBay, nice pickup, rare to see the worked backsprings.
