Flea market pickup
- The 863 pattern, however pattern number not marked
- Tang Stamp:
Schrade
Walden
NY U.S.A
- Blades pivot pin through the bolsters (not swinden pin system)
- A good honest knife with use, main blade well worn
- Main blade is saber ground, both sides
- Age , my guess between 1946 and maybe 1960 at most, would welcome any other age estimates
- Edited, one other detail, the back of the main blade is 2MM thick

Good old 863. I don't know anything about Schrades but if it were a Camillus the saber ground on both sides would put it back in the mid-forties or so.

I have several of the tang stamps but most of mine were given to me like you got yours.
If I had to assign a value I would say $20 to $50. A larger one may go for more on ebay.

Thanks for the reply orvet.I keep a record of all my knives just in case I have to make an insurance claim.I find it hard to resell a knife after I had it in my hands.

::hmm::
I am pretty sure that razor blade was added after the knife left the factory.

A knife that new should have been made with the Swinden key system. That one has a pin through the front bolster, clearly visible.

If you look back where the bolster meets the handle you will see a lip where the bolster was ground down to make the pin flush. Whoever did the work over ground the bolster while trying not to hit the handle.

Also you will see sanding marks on the bolsters from using too course of a sanding belt on the bolster and then not buffing the sanding marks out. I have not such poor finish work out of the Schrade factory.

Also, I do not recall ever seeing a razor blade in a Schrade. There may have been one pre-1947 with Schrade Cut Co, but I am reasonably sure they did not make one after Albert Baer bought the company in 1947.

If you look at the finish work on the razor blade it is entirely different than the finish work on the clip blade. Even though the clip blade has a lot of damage and wear to it, you can tell it once had a much better finish than the razor blade. The razor blade still has course grind marks on it. From the looks of the razor blade, I would say it came from a knife made in China or Pakistan.

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but IMO that razor blade does not belong in that knife. Hopefully you didn’t pay a lot of money for it, and it will be an inexpensive lesson. Don’t feel bad, I don’t know many collectors who haven’t bought a bad knife at some point in their collecting.

I would bet dollars to doughnuts that razor blade came out of a Taylor commisioned knife from Bear and Son, post bankruptcy. Bear & Son made a series for Taylor, and stamped SCHRADE WALDEN. They are actually pretty nice knives, but not the real deal.

Thanks for the information on the knife I have sent a message to the seller to see what he has to say.I see I have a lot more to learn .It seems that what your not told by sellers is what you have to check.I looked for the USA tang stamp and did you check the rest of the knife.Sometimes you think your at a used car lot ,buyer beware.

Just received this 8OT in the mail Schrade NY USA on one side of blade and 8OT on the other side. This is different because the Schrade Waldens had 8OT on the opposite side. You could say this knife was made in 1972 or 1973 Because the later Schrade NY USA had the 8OT on the same side. I hope I am right on this one not like the last two I posted .

Schrade put quite a few of the pattern numbers on the back of the master blades post 1973. It varied which patterns and for how long. Most of these will read SCHRADE / NY USA on the front side.

That 8OT with the matchstriker nail nick and number on the back is most likely the first run after they did away with the SCHRADE WALDEN stamp. I've seen the same knife with a matchstriker and the 8OT on a 3rd line on the front side too.
