Here is a nice little HOLLEY LAKE VILLE picked up the other day. It looks to have been used only lightly and/or once sharped with a steel. Note the presence of two years growth of nacre that the cutler left on the front scale. When I first glanced at it I wondered why but then I noticed the color. Surely the sign of a master cutler, to leave what at first glance looks as an imperfection, but upon further examination is what actually makes the knife unique.

just picked up this MOP congress and cleaned up the tangs and I'm confused on the main tang it says MELBORNE/WORKS/SHEFFIELD on an inner blade it says ISAC/BARNES+SONS/SUFFOLK Is this a blade replacement or the way they did it ???

garddogg56, Tweedsdale says Isaac Barnes &Co/Sons was at Melbourne Works, Suffolk Street in 1860's. Slim.

Here's on that qualifies. R & H Boker's Improved Cutlery circa. 1848-1869. It pre-dates the tree stamps.

This was in the bottom of a cigar box that was filled with old beauty supplies and nail clippers at the flea mkt yesterday.

That R&H Boker is one fantastic knife.

I must say, though, that tang mark is a new one to me.

Charlie: The tang stamp is an OLD one. According to John Goins' book, it is circa. 1848 - 1869 while Mark Zalesky's Boker article in Knife World dates it at 1860 - 1865. There are no tree stamps anywhere on the knife. Boker started using tree stamps in 1867.

Greedy, that is one of the finest old knives I've ever seen, from any manufacturer.

And, I had already checked Goins for that stamp.
