Nice Charlie! There are a couple of Ace Hardware stores around Jacksonville - I'm going Bear hunting today.

Since Bear & Son are the current topic, this one isn't really an EDC, it's more of a CTC (camping trip carry). Since Schrade USA is no more and there are no more American made sharpfingers, it's nice that Bear & Son has filled that vacancy very effectively! ::tu::

Phillip, I went out bear hunting today and scored a trophy - "Ace is the place with the friendly hardware/knife man"! According to the tang mark I got a Bear MGC 4" Stockman with "Genuine India Stag" handles (box says Bear & Son Cutlery on the label). I bought the knife in the display cabinet because the stag looked really nice and the walk and talk of the blades was strong. I will EDC this knife for the next week and let you know what I think - but so far I am impressed. OH

PS I assume the marks on the tang stamped on both sides of the "USA" are a date code similar to the used by Case?

Congratulations Old Hunter!! ::tu:: That's a fine lookin' knife. You can disregard my question on the canoe thread about your "Bear hunt". That's what I get for talking across threads! ::facepalm:: You are correct about the star markings on the tang stamp. It's my understanding that they started in 2010 and, like Case, they start with 10 and reduce it by one star every year. As a matter of fact I believe it was someone on this forum who gave me that information when I first got the sharpfinger pattern and asked that same question. Hope your new knife gives you many years of good service!

Yeah do that Charlie and I'll do the same.Hay by the way real sweet knife.I'm liking that stag. I got to have me one of those.Probably is going to be my next buy.
And so everybody knows, you can go to http://www.bearandsoncutlery.com/ and fill out a short form and they will send you a sweet catalog of all there stuff up to date.It has a nice piece on how to date there knives and even a little company history.I have conversed with one of the folk's at Bear&Son "Kin Griffey" by E-mail and and he was more than willing to help with a question about one of his knives. In fact he went plum out of his way with a follow up e-mail with a little more info about that knife.I do like what I see from Bear&Son.Let's hope they keep it up."God bless the MADE USA"

I think I understand why Grandpaw used the 80T and left the 881Y pretty much unused.

I have all three blades of the 80T whispering through paper. I can get the main blade of the 881Y to do that but the two little blades are giving me fits. All that said there is nothing in my pockets at this time. I MAY carry the 881Y tomorrow because my best sharpener (highway light bulb) is in the truck.

BTW. The 80T, 881Y and a Kutmaster my Dad gave me are all carbon.

And I discovered something. The Square bolsters on the Schrades are more comfy than the rounded ones on the Kutmaster. Exactly the same length so it is a fair comparison....

I've sharpened it up and used it for some open fire cooking chores, also used it for some rope work I did. It takes a good edge and performs well. Compared to my Schrade 152 I'd give it an 8.5 on a scale of 1 to 10. The fit and finish aren't as clean as the Schrade. I'd say it's a good knife for the money.

Here's a Bear that has been around the block a few times and held its own......

Let me clarify a couple things. The blades on the 881Y that are kicking my butt do NOT have a wire edge and look and feel sharp. But they will not go cleanly through paper.

My bolster comment is with the main blade open in a Sabre grip. The square bolster gives a more secure feeling to the thumb and index finger.

Round bolsters CARRY better for sure.

Anyhow I'm going to trade the 80T off for the 881Y today.

I was gonna post a pic but Photopail is not up this morning.

Fellers,

You bet I'm going to use it. I got it in the pocket as we speak. I work with screenprinting, so I get lots of boxes, lots of shirts, etc, to cut open and turn ito rags, etc. The wharncliffe blade on the whittlers, they make it fast to get thruogh one. Same with a sheepsfoot blade for me, hence a love of the congress pattern. I still carry my first favorite knife pattern though, a little peasnut style Case knives, for all those other days not working at the shop.

Regardless, I drifted! ::facepalm::

The knife is in use, and plan to keep it that way! These GEC blades are awesome.

Here is a reasonably good shot of the first knife I referred to, the Schrade 80T Old Timer
Note the shorter main and the very much different Spey:
Image

Here is a fair pic of the 881Y. On this knife one bolster/liner is sort of pulling away from the backspring for the main blade. I guess the Swinden Key isn't holding???
Image

And for reference here is a shot of the Kutmaster. It does not have the natural patina of the Schrades and shows some freckling on the smaller blades.
Image

I was able to get the small blades on the 881Y sharp enough to do paper using the light bulb.
And the Kutmaster does paper very well too.
