Just seen a nice black powder long rifle posted on the forum, for some reason it brought back a memory of an incident my father had forty years ago

My father had a hankering for a black powder gun, so back then he looked through a magazine and found a kit gun that you could buy, he ordered it. Now this was long before postal tracking the internet and impatient people who want their stuff delivered yesterday!

After about a month my father started to wonder if the kit would arrive, he would come in for lunch and ask " anyone see my gun kit?" Nope, mailman did not deliver it. Mail was usually delivered by 10AM each day the carrier was notified that we were waiting on this to arrive of course he had seen nothing. One day my father comes home from work and my mother asked him to go next door to the convenience store and get something she needed, he walks to the store and leaning against the front wall of the sore is a square cardboard box about the size and shape a gun kit would come in, he looks at the label and you guessed it the box was in his name! He asked the store clerk how long the box was there to which he replied " since the mail man left it there around 10AM!!!

Try that today and see how long it lasts, a different time indeed.

I have a handload for the GP100 that duplicates the factory 125 gr load, so I shoot that mostly. I have shot a lot of old ammo though. Before he past away, my dad gave me all his old ammo, primers and powder that he always kept in a damp basement. I fired all the 38 & 357 ammo and never had one fail. There was only one partial can of powder in a metal can that when I opened it had rust all over the inside of the can. The seal on the cap was bad. Tossed that one, but the rest was good, some of it was 40 years old. I would not use it as carry ammo though, plinking only. For carry ammo, I tend to use Hornady XTP or Speer Gold Dot that has the bullet jacket go all the way to the nose.

Back when I was building BP rifles, I would get the parts I wanted from Track of the Wolf. Colrain barrels were about the best and you HAD TO WAIT FOR IT TO BE MADE AFTER YOU ORDERED IT. They have some parts sets at Track now-a-days that are called "90% parts sets". You can have those in your lap in about a week. Even these still have a LOT of work to be done. The wood has to be shaped and thinned, the lock inletted and any furniture you want will need to be inletted also.

My first rifle was a block of walnut, the lock I wanted, the barrel I wanted and I made a lot of the furniture from sheet brass. It was a fun project and took about a year to complete (working in the afternoons after work for a couple of hours).

ANYWAY.... now to my point....LOL.
I never deer hunted until I was in my late 20's. I killed my first deer with the above BP rifle I made and with a bullet I cast from old wheel weights.

Now THAT was a load of fun!!


Oh, here is my first rifle... a Jaeger style rifle. The nose cap is a piece of horn I heated and bent to the shape I needed. I sure miss those days..... sitting around the wood stove... shooting bulls and making a gun. Both my friends from those days are gone on to their rewards now.
I think I will just stay here a while longer and work on knives.

I know there are sum snubby fans here.Gut me a new too me Ruger LCR IN .38 SPCL P+ Anything I should look out for??Since I gave my kid my old J-frame and been trying sum of these modern auto's I'm back to a five shooter.All the time I had the 642 I've wanted one of these

On my snubbies I apply "white out" to the front sight. This enables me to pick up the sight much faster than the black sight. Especially useful when shooting for speed.

That one ought to do the business. I’m a big fan of a good 38!

I recently bought a Ruger Mark IV .22 auto and I had heard about a tritium front sight from HI-VIZ, with replaceable green, red or white 'barrels,' so I installed one but I have not yet tried it out.

Like this QS I am in full agreement,picks up well I put a nail hardener also.

Hehe I made a nice little hybred holster for my Colt Cobra snubby too.

Great guns Gents. Love a wheel gun too. Usually carry a very reliable slide gun for EDC. Sometimes I carry my 4” .38 Diamondback or 6” .357 Python as primary or a backup carry.

As far as the Hornsby Critical Defense rounds, only use those in my wheel guns personally. Never tried it in my slide guns though.

That brings up a good question, does anyone here use frangible ammunition? Personally never tried it. At this point not inclined to. Love to hear some opinions if you use it.

It will work both ways by moving the straps, and equally well.

I like that Jack thanx for the input guys I thought there were more snubby fans or there isn't any problems to look out for in the LCR..

Personally, I don’t consider comfort when I carry a gun or even a knife. I consider need before that but when doing so, some may consider it overkill. So be it. Works for me.
I picked up a bunch of XL short sleeves shirts that are mainly poly or some other materials other than cotton than rarely “prints “. By the way, I live in Nevada and no law against printing but I prefer not to if I can. T Shirt underneath so hammer, grip, etc does not directly rub on skin.
That said, I assume your “comfort” question is in regards to firearm weight? My normal (75% of the time) is a SIG SAUER P220 5 inch 10 mm DA/SA that weighs almost 3 pounds loaded, 44 ounces in addition to 2 spare mags. . Some people say no one carries a gun that big or heavy. Just how I do it.
All my gun leather including belt is custom fit Mernickle. All holsters are right handed. If I carry Phyton as backup with right hand holster ( made to fit both snakes guns I own) it is left hip, butt forward straight up no cant or cross draw with 2 speed loaders front left pelvis.
Both of the guns and spare mags/ loaders are a heavy load and certainly not comfortable for sure. But “rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it”. Uncomfortable is the trade off I am willing to give up personally. We all do it differently...

Additionally, both snake guns I inherited from Dad with numerous hours of trigger time together on both at the range so I like to carry them often.
