I've never fished for salmon but would love to try. Do they put up a lot of fight when hooked ?

Yes, depending on where they are; the closer to the ocean the more they flight! I watched my dad boat a 75 lb Chinook salmon in the ocean, I think it took him 45 minutes to boat the fish. Quite a battle!
On the same trip I had to have him help me land a 10 pounder (I was 5), I remember cranking that big reel till I thought my arm would fall off, I would get him up to the boat and he would make another run and strip half the line off my spool. Dad finally had to land the fish for me.

But if you catch one several miles inland they are tired from swimming up stream and don't fight as well.

yep! especially when you have 300 yards of lead core out.

Typical Great Lakes 3 - 4 year old is in the 15 - 16 lb range.

That's the size of fish most of us only dream of catching. Great catch Dave.

Nice one Dogg. Did you use a streamer?

Nice catch, Dave.

I caught a small salmon in waters off of Olympic Peninsula. We ate it fresh. Oh baby, was that good.

Howdy dogg,
Freshwater, land locked, Great Lakes (Pacific transplanted) Chinook Salmon, is what we go after. We troll at 35', 55' and 85' deep. 6 rods total, 2 lures at each of those depths, plus flashers.

These Chinook's have a 4 year life span and at the end, they go spawn up one of the rivers that feed the lake.

On a normal half day out on the water, we'll get 10 - 13 strikes and boat 7 to 10 of them. I'll come home with 100 lbs of Salmon filet.

On the taste side of it, the freshwater Salmon have a milder flavor, when compared to ocean Salmon.

Beautiful Salmon, Dogg! That is a good size fish for a fly rod. I have never caught anything bigger than a maybe one pound bass on a fly rod. Nice!

Dave - those Great Lakes Salmon look ... healthy! I have never caught a Salmon but those fish sure look good.

Last Tuesday I was out on the water an caught this forty inch (more or less) Redfish (Red Drum) along with an assortment of small fry (literally fry, in my case). I always release the big Redfish since they are usually or maybe always females and the big ones are not as good to eat as small ones. It took me about forty five minutes to get this girl along side the boat and unhook her. You better believe I was ready for a beer when I got done releasing that fish!

Yeah, nice shot Mrs. Mel! Knice RED Mel! ::tu::

The community picnic table here happens to be surrounded by all kinds of mature trees. Compliment of Phil and Garry I've begun
a new hobby.....bird watching. I sit at the picnic table for me brunch cigar with my binoculars and Bird Field Guide Book.

Yesterday I spotted a Pileated Woodpecker, easily identified by the crown.....even though this pic is a silhouette, the crown stands out.
In real color it's fire engine red - the crown.

Do you have binoculars with which to spy on our little feathered friends?

Thankfully I do, I just don't have the camera gear I used to, to take proper pics.

Those are a couple of nice photos Scott - the Pileated photo and the book, knife and binos photo. I always like seeing Pileated Woodpeckers - they have really made a comeback in my area within my lifetime. The Pileated's call is very distinctive and they are not shy about announcing their presence!
