We've had posts here before about air rifles and pellet guns, but here's a new take on it I have not seen discussed. Texas recently legalized hunting with air rifles. Not squirrels or rabbits - we're talking deer and other larger game. I'm now seeing advertising for large bore air rifles. https://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/AirForce ... Rifle/3575 We're talking .257, .308, .357 and .45 calibers, operating at up to 1,100 for velocities!

Anyone had experience with large bore air rifles? Or thoughts about them?

I looked into one of the high power airguns, but for me at least there are several issues. The good ones are rather expensive, plus they operate at very high pressures and require expensive air pumps to charge. If you go the route of filling them at a scuba shop, that is one option, but it is best to have your own tank to fill at the scuba shop, then charge the rifle from that. The tanks can run many hundreds of dollars, so the total package cost on the bottom line turned me away. They do shoot very well, I heard from people that I have talked to. The Airforce precharged made in Texas are supposed to be very good. People hunt hogs with them in Texas.

I'd be curious to know how loud they are when fired.

I have no first-hand experience but one review I read (a five star positive review) said the .45 caliber air rifle's recoil was equivalent to a .410 shotgun, and recommended ear protection.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not seeing the advantage over a traditional cartridge fired weapon. ::shrug::

I think I agree Phil, but that's why I asked. Found a video about them on YouTube. The guy on it is shooting a .45 AirForce rifle. Warning - the video is 22 minutes long and he doesn't fire the rifle until about 8 minutes in.

As I recall, an air rifle was carried and used on the Lewis and Clark expedition. This did not work effectively on grizzly bears. But few things did. After their first experience with the bears, hunters could not travel solo. At least a couple of those old single shots were needed to bring a grizzly up short.

I wanted one, once upon a time, just because of the Lewis and Clark guns. The cost of the one I wanted provided an aspirin for that fever.
Instead, I built myself a rifle that shoots these....

Guys,
I managed to pick up a pair of Sigs at the local show this past weekend. I luv those Sigs! 8)
First photo is a P239, which is a single/double action model. It was priced right so I grabbed it up.
Second photo is a P220 Ernest Langdon model. It wasn't priced as right as the other one but I took it anyway!

Let us know how they shoot. If the Langdon shoots as good as it looks, you'r in for a treat.

Another one off the bucket list...got this at a local show, Marlin 39A made in 1969, don't think its had a box of shells through it.
Once deer season ends I'll take it rabbit hunting... :)

Those are great, I had one years ago and traded it off for ?????who knows what. Another one that I am kicking myself over. The only thing with those are the barrel on the one I had was 24 inches. Most modern 22 lr ammo actually loses velocity in a barrel that long. Rimfire ammo is tailored more for shorter rifle and pistol barrels.

Nice pickup Bob
I have one as well but mine is from the early 80s
I just bought this
Smith & Wesson 357 model 640 pro series
It’s my new carry
I have carried a variety of hand guns in the last 35 years from a 40 to a 32 and I have just become fond of the 357
I own a few different models with different barrel lengths and found I really like this one

Gino, I too have carried numerous little pistols and all of them uncomfortable to shoot. My boys bought me this when I retired and it has been in my left front pocket ever since. Easy to carry in the front pocket of my jeans and comfortable to shoot. I shoot Hornady .38's in it and do not feel under gunned. Pictures are from a little pocket pistol bullseye match we have.

Thanks Gino... I like that S&W, looking to upgrade my 642 but I'd like it to be a six shooter.

Did Marlin make that rifle with a straight stock?

Yes they did, a carbine with a 20" barrel. They made several variations by changing stocks and barrel lengths.

Why yes they did! Mine is a 1973 model 39M. Straight stock and 20 inch barrel and an absolute tack driver.

Oops just noticed Bob answered first.

gino, I like the looks of your S&W a lot, and very much so the grips. I wear this one each evening. First two rounds are .38 spec. followed by three .357 mags
