All About Pocket Knives

Dave, For simple, robust functionality you have to love the Opinel. Also like the patina they have on them - you can see they work, but are well cared for.

Rocky bombed me with two Schrade 863's today so I stuck the used one in my pocket. I've been talking so much about these Camillus 72's and clones, it's time to carry one for a while. Thanks Rocky.

Right front, clipped into the top of the jeans pocket, was this for the day:


This one rode Left front today, seeing as I am in town, and I don't necessarily want to whip out a big blade every time :





O1 tool steel blade, about 2 3/4" long, brass trim and rhus undulata (local hardwood) scales

MAN Smokepole I like the lines on that Barlow I carried these today while I maned the core-drill a CRKT and a Leatherman.

Thanks garddogg - that Barlow is one of those that you either like or you don't - not everyone's taste but I like it - and it is a real handy shape for small stuff around town.

garddogg, interestingly enough I was paging through one of my old sketch/design books looking for another design and I came across where I had designed that Barlow - as you can see I was looking at different blade options and initially had the bolsters shorter:

That it is... makes it one of those that is not to everyone's taste, but you have to have them too! And like I said, it works well for stuff like cutting up an apple, peeling oranges, cutting the meat off of a T-bone steak close to the bone, cutting rope, splitting open envelopes etc - all the smaller stuff around town you don't want to whip out a big lock blade or 5" trapper for...

I like it too! Nice job! This Tidioute White Owl has become one of my favorites. I've been carrying it on a daily basis for all of those chores you listed that don't require my jombo trapper. Not only does it do a fine job, it looks really good doing it!

Nice knives boys, my knives today aren't as nice but they are what I need at work while I'm working 14 hours a day on one of the worlds largest papermachine I'm carring a Buck Quickfire and a Case sodie Jr.

Well I would think so garddog. I gotta say the Buck and Case Sod are great to have in the pocket

Interesting Garddogg, I did some work for Westvaco a few years back (late '90s) when they were refurbing a paper mill in western MD. As I remember, the pay was pretty good. I'm carrying my Buck Quick-fire Tempest, my Gerber multi-tool, and the Tidioute White Owl today while doing chores around the property. Oh yeah! And the Leatherman Micra in my watch pocket.

Carried my "new to me" Old Cutler 4" Texas Jack in case I needed to cut up American flags for the flag retirement ceremony at our VFW post this morning. I didn't need to use my knife as the Ladies Auxiliary had already cut up all the flags and had them ready for us to retire. We had a terrific turnout of JROTC units from two local high schools to help; it was a good morning spent with some old veteran buddies and some fine, young Americans. I'm the young, good looking one!

Hey Squatch! I would have figured one of your multitude of beautiful canoes would have been the choice for today! You have such a vast and varied selection to choose from. After viewing all of those fantastic looking canoes from your collection over on the case canoe thread, your name will forever be associated in my head with that pattern! If I ever run across an actual sasquatch in the woods one day, first thing that will pop into my head is " I bet that squatch is packin' a canoe somewhere on his big furry self...."...That is a unique cool looking little stag number though!

Thanks Gino! Only thing is, the nice knife you saw in that last picture is the Old Cutler 4" Texas Jack that Philco gifted me with last week (and which has been my EDC virtually ever since). The Case 6292 (which I bought out of the Johnnie Fain collection from ORVET) is pictured here above the Colonial Old Cutler; I find the similarities to outweigh the differences. The Case is bone vs. Delrin, and the blade positions are swapped, nail nicks are cut differently, but handling, balance, and size are nearly exact. Old Cutler sure offered a lot of knife for the money in their day. OH

Oddly enough, when I got that Old Cutler is was because to me it looked so much like a Schrade Old Timer that it aroused my curiosity.
