Thanks Tom , you have definitely given us all a lot to consider and noodle on. I love the correlation with the actual scout patches and ranks that you shared. I too, have noticed that the eagle points left or right on various versions, and Kerr was good about highlighting this on the examples that he reviewed.

I was also thinking it might depend on which side of the river the eagle is on when fishing.

Thanks to Tom and others who have discussed these issues. Although I did not receive a specific answer, I learned a lot. Perhaps one of the presented versions is close to the truth (I especially liked the version by Philco ).
And to complete the topic, the last question - were there other models of BSA Ulster knives with an eagle facing the other way, besides the 1502?

Here are 10 examples for this discussion and some eye candy for my fellow addicts. 9 of the Eagles on the shields look left, and only one looks to the right. The one that looks to the right is an Ulster Dwight Divine and sons version. That is in contrast to another in the set with boxes that looks left and is also Ulster Dwight Divine and sons! Go figure.

All of my knives are safely tucked away until we settle into our new home next month but it wouldn't matter anyway because there's no way I can call your hand so forget raising the stakes - stunning - what was the original question anyways.

Could that be a fish eagle on that marlin spike ?

An absolutely beautiful collection of scout knives that you have here. While I always liked them, I only have one or two of them now n my collection. Don’t know why I haven’t acquired more but I think it’s because I’ve rarely come across any in the same pristine condition that yours are in.
As working knives, most used ones I’ve come across were in terrible condition. I don’t have the skills (or the patience) to do a proper restoration. You really don’t see many new ones being made today. I’m not familiar with any manufacturers that are currently producing them. If anyone knows of any, please let me know. The best condition scout knife I have is a Camillus steel handled. It’s in perfect condition. Shown along with my other Camillus steel handled knives.

Man those are some cool knives. I am a Casexx man. I really like those. Thanks for sharing.

Holy smokes but those are lovely specimens! And in their original boxes, no less. Congratulations on this amazing collection!

It's been a while since this thread got bumped, so I thought I'd bring it up for the upcoming weekend. And I will apologize in advance for crappy picture quality; I had foot surgery recently and I'm laid up on crutches and a scooter without access to my light box and good camera.

I have four 4-blade scout-pattern knives from Böker and I was hoping someone might know more about them. The first two are handled in Böker's excellent jigged Delrin product that is difficult to tell from genuine bone. One had a bail (now missing) and one did not. The one without a bail is stamped "INOX" and the other isn't, but I'm pretty sure they're both stainless steel. I think they date to the 1960's, but I'm hoping someone might know definitively.


The other mystery knives are a pair of Böker 940's. They are identical except for the position of the bail on the knife. They are handled with wood scales. Might anyone know when these were produced?

I thought I'd revive this thread with an unofficial Boy Scout Knife I can't document anywhere else. The blade is stamped with New York Knife's arm and hammer. The cap lifter is stamped, "New York, Knife Co., Walden." While the punch has "Pat. No. 701,878" stamped on it. The shield says, "Boy Scout." I found what appears to be the same knife with Excelsior on a Boy Scout thread on this site and one stamped Hibbard, Spencer & Bartlett on ScoutKnives.net. Thanks for looking.

I’m a huge fan of NYK and unfortunately there is very little documentation on the unofficial NYK scouts .
NYK produced and made them for other company’s like OVB , eagle Philadelphia , wallkill River works and I’m sure a few more .
They also came in a few blade and handle combinations and permanent and removable bails . I have collected over 50 different examples official and unofficial .
Would love to start maybe a separate thread for these if there was any interest .

Thanks for the info, Mike. I'd be happy to post unofficial scout knives or this New York Knife pattern as I run across them. This is one I intend to eventually sell as I don't collect this type of knife. I do think it's important to document them before they move on to new owners. Recieved a 3-Dot / 1977 Custom Case Scout in the mail this past week. I have always admired knives with file work done on them so now I have one of them for my collection. The closing snap on the main blade is a bit weaker than I'd like for it to be but other than that it's an eye catching piece of American Cutlery. Thanks for looking!

Add: The burl wood scales do have tiny screws in them but they look better & smaller in person. The scales are on it tight so that's all that really counts to me anyways. I would't be surprised if they were also glued on in some way. But I'll never really know.

Maybe I can trade it for a nice Case Tadpol with bone handles some day. Which along with a TC-Barlow, is one of my grail knives.

Camillus Cub Scout Knife (#1885? 1960's-1970's), Ulster - Dwight Divine & Sons Boy Scout Knife (#1502). They were included in a package deal with something else I was bidding for but they were a pleasant surprise.

Scored this at a flea market Sunday. Had to share before I post it on the bay.
