scroll down to 1870's and you will see the PHILADa from Disston of Philadelphia saw heritage.

The absence of the "P" and the ground away top portion of the "H" may indicate that the kick was worn away and a piece of steel welded on, also evidenced by the crack-looking joint on the kick. The kick has been worked on at some time, I think.

I can't quite tell from the pic, is that silver inlay in the handle? Some missing? If so, what is it an inlay of?

Everything I could find on the "PHILADa" (smaller "a") pointed to the smaller letter used to signify an abbreviation as well. I can tell you that it's no less odd in person looking at that stamp and wondering what happened to the "p".

I find the Disston link quite interesting and a great lead I will explore further. Also, this knife is quite big and hefty in the hand, so a saw maker/dealer retailing this knife would not be a stretch at all to me.

I don't pretend to know enough to guess a knife's country/city of origin by looking at it, but a concensus does seem to believe it is European manufactured for sale in the US.

It is silver inlay. Most is gone but it looks quite like a floral-type pattern I have seen on smaller german (I think?) knives.

Here are some more photos of the other markings on the knife, if anyone is interested. I'm happy to take close-ups of any angle if it's helpful.

I was looking at some of our knives with my son & I realized we had a Queen with an etch. It's a pretty little knife. I am not sure how or why, but there is a tiny hole in one bolster.

I also got these toothpicks as of late. I really love the Queen. The Schatt & Morgan is nice but, at some point, someone decided to buff the whiskers right off of it.

Here's a JDC Kane PA that will be featured on the cover Knife World Magazine in the near future. I looked for MANY years to find this beauty. Used but not abused. Man I love these old knives.

Wow! That knife is looks to be in excellent shape. It makes me wonder about the history. I think, why did the knife not see more service? Did the owner buy it and forget it or did he buy it and immediately get another that was his favorite? Where do they all come from? It is just an incredibly interesting hobby.

That is one fine specimen, and green bone to boot. Now that one was a real limited Edition without anyone even advertising it I surely would have a nice spot in my New cabinet should you not have any room?

I got this one a few years ago from my good friend Fran over new Allentown PA. He bought it with another knife and I convinced him that it really needed to be at my house. It is a budding knife and I beleive it was actually made by Schrade, as I seen one VERY similar in several of my books. It is stamped PHILA with the name of the seed/flower company as well. The handles were completely gone but a little black piece. I just replaced it with walnut to make it look like a knife. Its actually quite tight and well made. Enjoy another unusal PA related knife.

Here is a Tryon that we bought at the knife show. It is actually etched Warranted 3/T cutlery on the blade, but my scanner won't pick up the etch.

That is a fine one. Was Tidioute MFG stamping was made in the same time era and facility as the plain Tidioute stamp along side Union Razor? There is just too many associations, nieces,nephews,brother in laws,family,and partnering companies for me to remember

If I lived your guys neck of the woods I would have to concentrate just on "Knives from PA" just to keep all my facts straight.

I have read Mr. Anthony's book & I still get confused. I wish there was a clear date chart.

In the book, it states that Tidioute Mfg Co. were lower end knives that were mostly celluloid. The knife I just got seems to be a very well made piece.

I am sure Mr. Anthony will be able to answer your question..

first to answer questions. Tidioute MFG was a lesser brand of the second Tidioute cutlery Com. from 1909 to 1916 . Harry Baldwin bought remants of the company at a sheriffs sale, but was already making manicure tools "ROYAL MANICURE COMPANY" at that time. in Fact Tidioute Cutlery was making them for him. So that gives you a time frame, Now for the more important thing. Kathy and Brett, if you can ever find your way to part with that gem, please let me know. I have been trying to complete a set of Tidioute stamped knives in pearl and I obviously don't have this one. I have Tidioute MFG, but not pearl. If you might consider a trade of sorts, I would be honored.
