All About Pocket Knives

A lot of the abused knives pictured in this thread are very old, some 100 years old. Not this one that I recently acquired, made in 1985 and some one already has abused it half to death. It is a Case 6375, 4 and 1/4 inch stockman that has been left to accumulate rust and gunk. Then as if that was not enough, if you look closely at the sheepsfoot blade in my opinion it has been used for cutting shingles. I use a Stanley utility knife when I have to cut shingles and the disposable blade ends up looking just like this sheepsfoot. The point has been worn away, heavy scratches on the blade, and a residue of tar. It has nice bone handles and would have cost the owner some bucks. Why then put it to this kind of abuse? ]

I have been repairing a lot of old busted up, Broken, Battered, Beat-Up, Bruised but Beautiful Old Knives lately. I find it relaxing. I don't have the talent of some of the other APK members. I was just looking at 'Ol Dale's work earlier and man it is outstanding! However, an 'Ol simple minded country boy like me can mix up some epoxy glue, add some filler to a chipped scale, whip out some scotch bright pads and go to town on some Honest Old Knives and make a little more usable or at least not as damned ugly...

This one fits here I think.

I picked up this LB7 a while back for $3. I know what you are saying, who would pay $3 for that. It had animal hair and dried blood inside, and tar and paint on the outside, so it has been thru the wars. I had thought when I first looked at it that I could remove a little material to remove all the deep divots. But it was worse than it first appeared, so I just cleaned it up and sharpened it and into the emergency kit it went. Plenty of life left for that. And I was also thinking I could not even buy a new Chinese made knife for $3 that would perform like this one had and will.

That's easily worth ten times the price paid, OC! You'd spend $100.00 to get that quality in a new American knife now. You dun good!

I doubt that a blue-collar working knife like that would want to be dressed up too fancy then sit in a safe, anyway.
It was made to be ready for action!

This Western States sleeve board jack would qualify as abused by looking at the way the blades have been sharpened over its life time. Still has real nice bone and a bomb shield. The master blade has a swayback and the pen blade has been broken and reprofiled. Still sharpens up good and carries good in the pocket.

That's my kinda' knife. Still does the job, and will for a long time to come!

That is sure looking good! Love seeing those old faithful beautifully made knives get some attention and made proud again.

How about this old Wilbert for being beat up and abused. Note how the rocker pin has been replaced by a nail and the nail bent over on the mark side. Some one also tried to serrate the blade. I bought it for a buck because it has one useable blade I need for another Wilbert.

Yes, it was. But that was a long time ago. I generally always buy Wilberts no matter what the condition for parts if nothing else.

Yes, it was. But that was a long time ago. I generally always buy Wilberts no matter what the condition for parts if nothing else.

Don't blame you there. They are hard to come by. I don't think I've ever come across one here in Ga. If I did, it was pristine in someones collection!

Yes it does, sir. It speaks well for Robeson who put out a quality knife.

Picked this up the other day at a local consignment shop for $5. Thought it was pretty cool, found out later that it has a badly cracked plastic scale on the pile side and the pen blade had been either chipped or electrified. Still worth it to me to try and give life back to. I checked the tang stamps on here and I didn't see the 1915 on the tang so this is the next conclusion.

No problem, I labeled the pictures as to each maker. Most of the problems are obvious from looking at the pictures. Broken blades, handles, no blade snap, etc. All are old and well built quality made from the major knife factories at the time almost all have half stops on the blades.

How about this Winchester cattle knife for being broken, abused and used up. If only it could tell its story. On the plus side all 3 blades have excellent snap.
