New at posting pictures so am practicing. Nothing special about these scout type knives. Just ordinary early examples.

3030remchesterCOLO wrote: Sun Apr 02, 2023 2:50 pm As requested, I am posting pictures of a few scout knives. This is my very first, do it alone, attempt at posting pictures so be kind. Since I have yet to figure out how to post pictures and text at same time, I will have to describe knives in another post as now.

The first knife probably doesn't count as a scout knife as it only has 2 blades, but I thought it was worth a view. Typical New York Knife Co. knife, however, the secondary blade is unusual enough and has enough functions to be of intertest. The blade as can be seen has a cap lifter, can opener, gaslight valve opening square? That blade is marked Pat. Applied for on one side and New York Knife on the other.

The second knife is just eye candy and is an Ulster with a shield marked "ARMY"

The third knife is the Miller Brothers with the unusual cap lifter/screwdriver/ tack puller? It makes sense to me as this blade rapidly tapers towards the tip of the blade and would easily fit under a tack.
Great job on posting the pictures ::tu::

Nice collection of knives, I am curious about the Ulster, what is stamped on the punch blade?

Good evening gentlemen. Lurked around this forum for years but seldom post. I do have a question or two that maybe you could help with. First are the typical 4 blade knives shown all considered scout knives even though they aren't real boy scout sanctioned knives. I have several like most folks that have various shields stating different words. An example is an arched Utica with a bar shield marked "outing".

Second question concerning these 4-blade camp? knives. A particular example is a Miller Brothers I possess that is typical Miller quality with great bone scales but this model has an unusual feature. The cap lifter/screwdriver blade is typical with the exception of having a u shape notch between the lifter and screwdriver tip. I have never seen this on any other make. I can post pictures however my wife has to assist, and it is tax season and I tread lightly around here this time of year.

On early model knives of this design, often there was a square notch on the screwdriver blade that early on was called a skate key notch but later called a gaslight bottle notch. What was the square notch actually used for?
Congratulations - looks like you have the picture posting figured out! You have some great knives!

I’ll make an attempt at answering your questions (Dimitri aka Miller Bro’s already answered the second one). You can get most of your questions answered by reading through other posts in this thread, which will provide a pretty thorough treatise on the pattern’s evolution including details of the BSA sanctioned knives, who made them, and attempts by the BSA to legally protect their name from unauthorized use by entrepreneurial cutlery companies. But to summarize, the 4-blade pattern is called variously a scout, camp, or utility pattern interchangeably - all names for pretty much the same pattern. Most folks refer to knives sanctioned by a Scouting organization as “official” BSA, Girl Scouts, Campfire Girls, etc, knives. An “official” scout knife of other patterns is often referred to as a ‘Scout Knife”, but a camp, camper, or utility knife is typically the 4-blade pattern, but sometimes includes patterns also having corkscrews or other tools, such as on the Remington R3842 or the older identical Böker pattern which preceded it.

It’s my understanding the Prest-o-Lite acetylene valve is a different size than the skate key (skate key hole is larger). (I reserve the right to be wrong, and corrected accordingly). ::paranoid::  Acetylene lights were replaced on most vehicles by early 1920s, therefore the need for those wrenches faded out along with it. But the main reason why that square hole in the blade is unlikely to be a skate key is the location of the adjustment on a roller skate. True a skate key is typically a square hole wrench, but affixed to an extension or tube, such that it can be inserted to reach the adjustment on a skate. A location not typically accessible by a pocket knife blade.

Thanks for the replies. I have steered away from participating in such forums as I am computer challenged to say the least. My young grandsons just shake their head and mumble something about "old people" when I am having problems.

I was asked what the Ulster scout knife I recently posted photos of, had written on the punch blade. The punch blade has the following,"U.S. Pat. 033146. The main blade is scratched up by previous owner but has faint remains of an inscription. ULSTER --- BRAND. Between the 2 words looks to be a "pattern" is the best I can describe it. Kind of reminds me of an Egyptian hieroglyphic symbol.

I am adding a few others. Strikingly while the iron is hot mentally, as I could very well forget how to post pictures after my nap. I show the next 2 together to show size differences. The first is a little Remington Boy Scout knife pattern Rs 4233. The Goldstone scaled behemoth I believe are either called a jumbo or Kit Carson. I was told it was either made by Ulster or Utica. The blade inscription is "BLITH-MIZE HDWE Co.

The NYK is very similar to the official Boy Scout version .
I see that others answered most of your questions. Of note, you actually have an official Boy Scout knife here, a rare and very hard to find artifact. NYK Co used “be prepared”, the scout motto, on the earliest official Boy Scout knife models.

Thank you for sharing the pictures, you have some beautiful specimens in your collection!

RONFISH, you stated that I had a hard-to-find official Boy Scout knife. I am assuming you are referring to the New York Knife Co. folder. Since it doesn't have the "Be Prepared" inscription on the shield as the earlier models had, what age would you approximate mine at?

Here is photo of an Ulster scout knife being offered for sale. Looks like synthetic handle covers to me.

Seller says "slick" in spite of blade darkening. I suppose he means that it has flawless operations; that is, good "walk and talk".

I am not a potential buyer. Just curious and open to learning.

One last, quite common and more modern, Boy Scout knife I found in a tackle box at a yard sale last year. Still in original carton, I thought it was unused. However it had been used once and left uncleaned. Thought it looks good there is some stains on the main blade. The price for the entire tackle box and all contents was $5, I couldn't go wrong.

Ooooooook. I guess I was hallucinating? I do dream about knives a lot, :D I would expect it to be c1920’s.

3030, in your previous post there was a picture of a two-blade New York Knife having a shield stamped “Be Prepared”. That is the “hard-to-find” knife to which Ron was referring. That is an official BSA scout knife.

Someone, I assume you, has removed the picture. ::shrug:: Can you re-post that picture?

Great looking Scout troop there ronfish.

Here is a Western Split Tang Model 66 Scout Fixed Blade knife. Before this, I have only seen the Western Scout Fixed Blades with Stacked Leather handles. But the Stag on this one appears original to me. ::shrug::

Thanks, GSTOPDOG for your comment on the unusual New York Knife. The Miller Bros. with the tack puller notch is also intriguing to me, though I didn't know what the notch was for till a member explained it to me.
