Very cool Dale!! Glad you're repaiting axe's now too

Don't really collect them, but this one was in the bottom of an auction box lot a few years ago. Just got around to putting it to the wire wheel and it's hard to see, but it looks to be stamped "WESTERN".

It's a rusty ol' dog, but should sharpen up good enough to use. Am I really thinking about winter already?!

I buy every hatchet/axe I find at estate/garage/yard sales, even this one.
Somebody used this as a hammer and not as an axe. The pole has been reshaped to a bowl, but the axe end looks unused!

With no power tools how can I remove this immense steel curl that's been created?
There's still so much life left in 'er.
Just take here to someone who has a grinder?

That is really sad. I did not know that the end was called the pole end? My first thought is to try a "saw z all" or reciprocating saw with a fine tooth blade and cut the rolled over pieces off. Or a very course grinding stone on a bench grinder. Also a 4 inch right angle grinder. Always good to have friends when in need. Bob

Found this Bridgeport Boy Scouts hatchet with yellow tape on handle, and uncovered the handle was broke.....and I ain't talkin' bout the wood

So I wrapped 'er with some paracord and we're rockin' to the choppin' beat!

It is fully functional, my 5 year old grandson cut through a 4" diameter piece of cedar log
yesterday with it. He swings the axe like a grown man.....such UMPH and accuracy!

Here is the rarest axe head I've ever found. It is unique for three reasons. The manufacturer was O. S. Hinds a very small concern in St. Albans, Vermont. The pattern is called turpentine or box because this type of axe was used to cut openings or boxes into pine trees to collect the sap to make turpentine. Theses axes became obsolete around 1900. This one is NOS, never been used.

This is an ice axe and ice hatchet used to cut ice blocks in the days before refrigeration. I think the axe would have been used in the ice house and the hatchet by the man delivering ice to homes and businesses to cut pieces to size.

With a chopping block this Cold Steel Tomahawk destroyed the branches of a tree we trimmed. Much faster than Fiskars clippers. More fun too.

Thanks Scott, you can get some serious swing speed with it. Destroys Dogwood too. One blow with the Hawk and it goes right through 1 1/2 inch branches. Three blows for the bigger one in the bottom picture, right of the blade. Very handy tool.
