Sorry to hear that T.J. but everybody's gotta go sometime and 88's a long life. It's a great loss to the music industry and Bluegrass fans everywhere.

I was reading a John Sandford book and saw this mentioned. I'd never heard it before and to tell the truth had never heard Jerry Jeff Walker. Had heard his name mentioned in a song or two (I think David Allen Coe) so I went to YouTube and gave a listen to "I Feel Like Hank Williams Tonight".

Really dig Jerry Jeff. This is one of his most famous compositions, "Mr. Bojangles" made famous by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Mr Bojangles takes me back to the ole high school days. Thats a great song I don't hear very often on the golden oldies radio stations.

TJ, that was news to me to hear of the passing of Earl Scruggs. His Foggy Mountain Breakdown is one of the best instrumental bluegrass songs ever!

Hazel Jane Dickens (June 1, 1935 – April 22, 2011) was a female American bluegrass singer, songwriter, double bassist and guitarist. She was the eighth child of an eleven-child mining family in West Virginia. Her music is characterized not only by her high, lonesome singing style, but also by her provocative pro-union, feminist songs.

Dickens was born in Mercer County, West Virginia. She met Mike Seeger, younger half-brother of Pete Seeger and founding member of the New Lost City Ramblers and became active in the Baltimore-Washington area bluegrass and folk music scene during the 1960s. During this time she also established a collaborative relationship with Mike Seeger's wife, Alice Gerrard, and as "Hazel & Alice" recorded two albums for the Folkways label: Who's That Knocking (And Other Bluegrass Country Music) (1965) and Won't You Come & Sing for Me (1973). Dickens and Gerrard were bluegrass bandleaders at a time when the vast majority of bluegrass bands were led by men.

I love good bluegrass and Old Time, but my heart leans toward singer/songwriters who can captivate a room- Jim Croce, John Prine, Todd Snider, among others. For those not familiar, check out a Kentucky boy named Chris Knight- one of the finest songwriters working today. Check out "Down the River" and "North Dakota" on youtube.

Jigslinger, all good stuff. Post the videos for those songs so we can all give a listen. After all, that's what this thread is for.

Here is Pam Gadd. She was lead singer for the 80's/90's Country band "Wild Rose", member of "New Coon Creek Girls", sang back up to Patty Loveless, and was the last girl singer with Porter Wagoner before he died. Her daddy and I were pickin' pals and I did get to pick with her a couple of times. Great singer/song writer/musician.

Jerry Jeff Walker's album "Viva Terlingua" is a staple of Texas music. It is the one album I own that has - over the years - gone through 8-track, cassette, CD, and download on i-Tunes in my house. It still listens as well today as it did in the 1970s. Some of the best lyrics / songwriting I have ever heard.
