Knice pick-ups, everyone! The youngster ought to like that Tinker. I was about 12 or 13 when one was bought with my own money. It's long gone, but easily identifiable.

I recieved this one about a week ago but never got around to posting pictures of it. I'm very happy about it being slightly used. Otherwise it would have gone into my showcase but this way, it went into my pocket last week. Will probably get to stay in there for the next week as well.

Nice pick up. I have the large one, and they are great knives. The bone on yours is fantastic.

You’ll like that one, Tom. Perfect carry size, I’ve always found the large ones to be a bit bulky in the pocket.

As for me, I’ve made it all the way into May without buying a single knife. Recent events have caused me to reevaluate my priorities and I’m trying to kick the habit. Nevertheless, having grown up watching Fess Parker play Davy Crockett I couldn’t resist the nostalgia in this one. So here’s my first knife of 2023.

As a side note, this knife was clearly targeted at young boys. You couldn’t do that in today’s world.

I carried a pocket knife at school. Almost everyone I know did. Miss the old days.

Didn't he play Dan'l Boone too, my memory is not what it use to be?

The May Buck of the Month came to my mail box today! I almost missed getting one because the notification email from Buck that the BOTM was available arrived 24-hrs late and by then the run was sold out. Fortunately, my son received the email from Buck on time and he let me know.

The May BOTM is the Model 110 Slim Pro TRX. The Blade is 3V steel and the scales and pocket clip are Cerakoted in black. The scales are brass, which will go good with my collection of copper and aluminum scaled 110s. The blade came shaving sharp and with the most even hand grind I have seen from Buck in the last coulple of purchases.

I recently received a Bear & Sons folder that is quite similar to your Buck, in that the covers are all brass and it's a sodbuster pattern, the 2 knives could easily be brothers.
I was quite impressed with it when it arrived and still am!

Just got this Queen Bulldog.

Nice one Steamboat W, trying to kick the habit is right. Still trying to kick it myself. But it's more like addiction. I still lie when I say I'm done buying. Good laugh though.

Three knives arrived yesterday. The first two were handmade in Finland and are going to be given as gifts.

This one is for me, a Seki-Cut reproduction of a Bob Lum design named the Encounter. It has a 4" D2 steel blade with a 5.25 handle made of hard anodized aircraft aluminum. The liners are stainless steel. On the blade are the logos of Bub Lum in red and Haruo Suetaki in black. Haruo is the founder of Seki Cut.

The knife is sturdily constructed and comes with a razor-sharp edge. HOWEVER, Mr. Lum's schematic of his design reveals that the reproduction deviated from his design in one important matter, namely the placement of the thumb stud.

In a so-called "tactical" knife a smooth and fast opening is essential. For example, say some clothing gets caught in a piece of machinery. There cannot be the slightest delay in cutting oneself free. Mr. Lum's design clearly shows the thumb stud is placed just forward of the ricasso if the ricasso extended up to the spine. But the Japanese have placed the stud within the ricasso, further back towards the handle. This small deviation makes all the difference in providing leverage for opening. The result is that while the Encounter's opening is smooth, its opening is comparatively slow because of awkward leverage on the stud.

In other Lum reproductions by Spyderco the thumb hole is always placed forward of the ricasso line resulting in a very quick and easy opening.

For the money, this is an excellent knife. But if Lum's design had been followed it could have been a great knife.

Picked this up an hour ago.
Bird & Trout, 71//2" overall w. 3" blade of CPM 154 stainless, hand rubbed satin finish. handles are of Mun Ebony with black liners, G10 pins & lanyard tube. 1st one I designed. have 1 per month ordered til end of year to include a cleaver of raindrop damascus, desert ironwood handles w. black ebony bolster and fancy pins.

That's a great choice of models you picked, it's a shame it didn't thrill you once it arrived cuz I knew you were looking forward to your new knife.
Your explanation of studs I found very interesting, especially since you got into the physics and not just how it looks. I have very few knives I can open easily and gracefully via the stud, but with it's new placement closer to the handle and small size, I figure my short stubby fingers could manipulate the blade opening with no trouble. For myself, when I see a model I like and then I see it has a stud causes me to pause and I start thinking about how it will look without the stud, as well as is there enough exposed blade to pinch it open with 2 fingers. The very first thought when I see a stud any stud is "I bet that catches on the material when pulling it from your pocket", but that thought it quickly replaced with wondering how it will look without it, since I don't carry my knives and won't need to be concerned about snags. I've stated many times my lack of fondness for thumb-studs, but if I had to accept one on a knife I buy, it would be like the one on your knife, cuz I'm very much liking the repositioned design, it seems to make it less intrusive to my mind's-eye, along with ease of use would make it a great choice.
It has such a soothing appearance with the black smooth covers and shiny new clip blade, to say nothing of it's over 9" length which has my full approval.
I guess they can't ALL be diamonds, the occasional sapphire tossed in for good measure keeps things interesting!

Marco, I can see that placing the stud close to the hilt makes it less intrusive. But when that position is used on any knife my thumb struggles to apply enough accurate force to make a quick opening. And I do think that when a brand says it is a Lum design they have an obligation to follow that design. But I could be wrong about that. Anyhow it is a well made knife and I have no urgent need for fast opening.
