A long line Camillus Tang Stamp 72 Swell Center Whittler. It has the dark brown handles with the federal shield. All blades are tight with excellent snap. No wobble, great luster and few scratches and has not been abused. I am sure these pictures don't capture how good it looks.

I do appreciate it along with the friendship and commaraderie we have here on AAPK.


Plus just for good measure he threw a Buck 110 in the box also. Can you say overkill. But I do appreciate it.

I don’t know what it is about them necessarily, or if it was just certain years they were produced, but the brown Delrin federal shield versions are my favorite users of the 72 family.

Appreciate it. I have become quite fond of all 72's, but I agree, the ones with the darker almost walnut brown with the federal shield I really like. But I also like the early black handles. Hopefully one day I will luck up on a short line tangstamp version.

Picked this one up today at a small flea market near me. A long line Camillus 72 swell center whittler. It has the Federal style shield and what I call the later lighter reddish brown delrin handles. I have this handle in the later double line Camillus tang stamp 72 and the Camillus 1047 Scout shield whittler, but not in the long line.

This one does have scratches, with some minimal shrinkage on the handles, but the blades still have snap. The Secondary Clip and the Coping blade have very good snap, but the main clip blade has weak snap. But this will make a good filler and edc until a better one comes along. It needed a little cleaning and oiling and I have put some case paste on the blades and bolsters. It has some indentations and scratches on the bolsters and shield like it has been dropped a few times.

Well, I have another addition to my Camillus & 72 Family. I received this one in the mail today. A Camillus 72 Yellow Jacket, with Yellow Delrin Handles, and Yellow Jacket etch on the main clip blade. It has the double line Camillus Tang Stamp with the Double Line Camillus Shield. The blades are like new, no wobble, smooth opening with excellent snap on all blades and have not been put on a stone. All blades have the original factory grind & luster. It has some light scratches on the bolsters, and the blade wells are clean.

This is my second 72 Yellow Jacket, but is in considerable better shape than my first one and has a more clear bold blade etch.
Here are some pictures right after I took it out of the mailer.

I posted this on another knife site and was sent here. Still sifting through all the posts about the #72!

So the knife on the right, is my boyhood 'Scout' folder from the early 60's. I whittled down a Soapbox Derby car with it...the reason it was purchased. I think I was 8yrs old at the time...Cub Scouts. Then some older idiot told me tree sap was cool to chew. And this 8yr old idiot went out to carve some tree sap. Knife folded on my finger nearly severing in half. Dropped the knife at the base of the tree and ran for my life/finger. 30yrs later was going through my dad's 'tool' drawer and there she was, still blood stained.

I cleaned it up and started using it. Spring broke and I ran into a knife 'maker'. Said he could fix it up no problems. Should have been more communication between us as to what I wanted/expected. As you can see, he didn't use back the correct silver end pins. And I don't know why he did this, but he buffed down the handle slabs where the rivet pin is...essentially ruining the knife.

The knife on the left is a much later Camillus from maybe the 80's? Anyway, I want to sacrifice the handle slabs on that knife to go on my original knife. And to have the correct silver pins put in the ends, of course. I don't see this as a really expensive repair....even thought of doing it myself, but never worked on a knife like that before. Big caveat is that I don't wont to damage the old one further.

Suggestions?

Still like to hang around the #72 thread and learn about all the variants. Since my original Scout #72 was buried in a tool drawer for 35yrs, I never got to use it or collect others.

Kevin ,good to go , glad you are navigating around okay! There’s a lot of good reading and pics in the Camillus area. As some of the old timers here mentioned to me ,be careful ,72 s and the clones can be a lot itself. Almost addictive. The best thing I did was listen to the people that have gone before us learn about different tang stamps ,shields, handles, blades and there configuration. Don’t be afraid to post for fear of mistakes, have learned valuable info by posting ? S . Hope you stick around the Camillus area,always good to have more of us here.

Thank you! Yes, lots to learn about Camillus and specifically the #72....the little pocket folder that started with me at 8, presumed to be lost forever and then found 35yrs later.

I think there's a pretty good supply of old pocket folders out & about still. Everyone I knew growing up in the 50's/60's had one at one time or another. All the old time hardware stores and sports shops always had seductive displays of folders in the $10-$20 range. They can't all have been lost and people are inherently pack rates.....most of us.

I was always drawn to yellow handle folders, although until about ten yrs ago, I never bought one.

Be careful with those 72's. You buy one then this happens. But there are worse things you could be doing. Welcome to AAPK.
