All About Pocket Knives

Today I added this pocket knife to my collection. It is an EAGLE KNIFE CO. (1916-1919), single blade, 1 tool, "SCOUT KNIFE" pocket knife. It needed a little cleaning. I cleaned it, took some pictures and here it is.

Garry I apologize for not replying to you until now. I had not visited this thread for quite a while so I missed your question.

I would estimate my scout collection is about half official scout knives and half non official knives.

Not a problem Phil. I was just curious. It sounds like you have a good slug of scout knives as well as the utility blades. Thanks.

Interesting. I have not seen one of those before now. Another case of a manufacturer naming something uniquely different from the generally accepted definition. Maybe they felt the inclusion of the screwdriver/caplifter blade made it a “scout knife”. Does anyone know the approximate age?

Sorry I missed that.

That would put it at the time shortly after the BSA was formed (1910) and the first “official” licensed Boy Scout knives were made. The scout/utility pattern was becoming very popular at that time so many companies were making the pattern. It’s interesting to see an example that’s a different pattern but having the name “Scout Knife” on it.

Here is the description and a picture of the knife as it appears in the book, "600 SCOUT KNIVES" by Joseph Richard Kerr.
Unlike the knife in the picture and the description, mine does NOT have the blade etch (not surprising). It also has a different tang stamp and it's missing the triangle shaped bail. I now have five EAGLE KNIFE CO. pocket knives.

That makes sense. The pattern, or a version of it was a licensed official BSA knife. IIRC somewhere in Kerr’s book he explains that up until around WWII the BSA tried to discourage (I think they used legal actions) companies from using words like Boy Scout, Be Prepared and versions thereof on their products without buying a license. Obviously Eagle had a license.

Actually Ken, the description and picture of this particular knife, along with MANY, MANY others, is in a section of the book titled "(SECTION 2) PROTOTYPE, NEVER ADOPTED PATTERNS." I don't consider this knife to be a prototype, but instead, a never adopted pattern.

Thanks for that clarification. I guess I need to get out my copy of Kerr’s book and read it again rather than making assumptions from pictures. Apparently Eagle was one among the many trying to capitalize on the new “scouting” movement’s popularity at the time.

A VERY clean, GEO. SCHRADE, Girl Scout utensil kit. Both the knife and fork are tang stamped, but the fork isn't stamped STAINLESS STEEL. If you're curious, the spoon is marked ALLEGHENY STAINLESS STEEL WB (over) W. I didn't have to clean any part of it. I took some pictures and here it is.

You got that one brand new Skip. Very knice!

Thank you David. I'm not 100% sure about the spoons. I have scout utensil kit spoons that are marked ALLEGHENY STAINLESS STEEL WB (over) W, STAINLESS BY WALLACE, SIMPSON NICKEL SILVER and STAINLESS U.S.A. Does a particular spoon go with a specific scout utensil kit? I don't know. I'm pretty sure that my SIMPSON NICKEL SILVER spoon is NOT original to ANY scout utensil kit. Not even the Camp Fire Girls utensil kit.

I don't know that there was a standard spoon as I have seen several different ones.

Here are the spoons that I currently have, front and back. These came with the various scouting utensil kits that I've purchased. Out of the first three spoons pictured, I'm 99.99% sure that the spoon on the top and the spoon in the middle are owner(s) provided replacements. The spoon on the bottom, I'm not sure about. The last four spoons pictured are the spoons that I believe were issued with the original scout utensil kits. Now which spoon went with the Boy Scout kit and which spoon went with the Girl Scout kit? I think the "plain" spoon goes with the Boy Scout utensil kit and the design" spoon, with the Girl Scout utensil kit.

Here is an unusual Scout knife.
The inscription is a early version of the scout law that a scout is friendly.
Its was probably a scout leaders Tie bar knife. Anson USA has produced Men's accessories since 1938 in Providence RI
I e-mail them to see if they can date the Tie Bar/ Knife combination.

Nice find. It would be interesting to ask also whether that was an “official” BSA item, authorized by the BSA. Since it doesn’t have the BSA emblem or say “Boy Scouts of America” anywhere, my guess is it’s not official. Neat item anyway even if not.

Sorry for not commenting on recent postings as I haven't caught up yet on my reading ...
but I had found this old Ulster Scout Knife while I was on vacation last week. Used... but not abused... (like the other one I have.)
I'm hesitant to clean it up because I actually like the patina on the blades.

....I don't blame you!!, I would just oil it up and leave it like it is!!!!............... ...............

Winchester 4950 Scout.

Interesting knife Rodger. Does it have the napanoch style punch?
