All About Pocket Knives

Very recently, my trip to the post office produced this pocket knife. It now becomes my most recent example to be posted under this topic or thread. It is also the latest example to be added to my collection. It is a CRUSADER, two blades, one tang stamp, 3 3/8" closed, all metal, pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says "CRUSADER (over) TRADEMARK (over) MADE IN U.S.A." Per GOINS "CRUSADER TRADEMARK MADE IN U.S.A. c 1939-1940 A trademark used by Belknap Hardware." While it most definitely is NOT an ALLEN CUTLERY COMPANY (1917-1925) pocket knife, it DOES fit into the "cousin" category. It is a "cousin" of the EAGLE KNIFE COMPANY (1916-1919), the DIXON CUTLERY COMPANY (1920) and the other cutlery companies that manufactured pocket knives of a similar, simple, pattern or style. The main blade has a good half stop with a weak opening and closing snap. The secondary blade also has a good half stop, with a weak opening and closing snap. Overall, this pocket knife is in FAIR+ condition. Contrary to how it appears in the pictures, the main blade tip is NOT broken. This pocket knife needed cleaning. I cleaned it up a bit, I took some pictures and here it is.

Per GOINS, "Etched in L.I.C.N.Y. c 1933." The main handle side says nothing, but it has some graphics and a space for engraving. The other handle side says "1933 - CHICAGO" and also has some graphics. Overall, this is my nineteenth pocket knife in this pattern or style. My other eighteen are ALL posted under this topic or thread. This is my sixth souvenir or tourist pocket knife, in this pattern or style, that features this particular event. But, this is my second, "1933 CHICAGO" pocket knife. My four "1934 CHICAGO" pocket knives have ALL been previously posted under this topic or thread. I bought this pattern or style of pocket knife because it is a "cousin" of the Allen Cutlery Company, the Eagle Knife Company and the other cutlery companies that manufactured pocket knives of a similar, simple, pattern or style. The blade rides a little high. But, overall, it is in GOOD condition. It needed very little cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

It also becomes the latest example to be added to my collection. It is a U.S.A., one blade, cap lifter or bottle opener handle, all metal, 3" closed, fob or key ring, pattern or style of pocket knife. It has "U.S.A." stamped on the handle, just above the pivot pin. It has a slide lock that unlocks the blade, open or closed and it also locks the blade, open or closed. The main handle side says "COASTAL PLAINS SUPPLY - RI 1-1776 DALLAS, TEXAS" The other handle side says "EQUIPMENT & BEARING - SPECIALISTS" This is my nineteenth fob or key ring pocket knife in this pattern or style. My other eighteen have ALL been previously posted under this topic or thread. I bought this pocket knife because it is a "cousin" of the Allen Cutlery Company, the Eagle Knife Company, the G. Schrade Knife Company and other cutlery companies that manufactured pocket knives of a similar, simple, pattern or style. This pocket knife is in EXCELLENT condition. It did NOT need any cleaning. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures and here it is.

Yesterday afternoon, my trip to the post office produced this pocket knife oddity. It is my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. It is also the latest example to be added to my collection. It is a SHAPLEIGH or ALLEN, one blade, one tang stamp, one handle stamp, 3 1/8" closed, all metal, pocket knife. This is a pocket knife oddity because it has a SHAPLEIGH blade with an ALLEN CUTLERY COMPANY handle. The main blade front tang stamp is the curved or arched style and says "SHAPLEIGH HDW. Co. (over) St. LOUIS (over) U.S.A" The handle stamp says "PAT. (over) JAN-23-17 (over) U.S.A." ALLEN CUTLERY COMPANY (1917-1925), pocket knives with one blade, with the same handle pattern or style, have three parts. The three parts are, the blade, the handle and the pivot pin. After comparing the pivot pin used with this pocket knife and the pivot pins used with my other ALLEN CUTLERY COMPANY, one blade, same handle pattern or style pocket knives, I am 99.999% sure that the pivot pin used with this pocket knife, is an original ALLEN CUTLERY COMPANY pivot pin. So, this pocket knife is two thirds ALLEN CUTLERY COMPANY and one third SHAPLEIGH HARDWARE COMPANY. Another example, I think, of a previous owner combining surviving parts of two, different pocket knives, to make one, functional, pocket knife. I do NOT believe that this was an attempt to deceive any potential buyer. Overall, this pocket knife is in GOOD+ condition. I cleaned it up a bit. I took some pictures and here it is.

Very recently, a visit to the post office produced this ALLEN CUTLERY COMPANY, NEWBURGH, N.Y., (1917-1925) pocket knife. It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. It is also the latest example to be added to my collection. It is an ALLEN CUTLERY CO. (Boys' Pattern No. 01), one blade, one handle stamp, 3 1/8" closed, all metal, pocket knife. The faint remains of the patent stamp are on the handle. The handle patent stamp, if it were complete, would say, "PAT. (over) JAN-23-17 (over) U.S.A." This pocket knife is in GOOD condition. The blade has a good half stop along with a very crisp opening and closing snap. I cleaned it up a little. I took some pictures and here it is.

The little knob on top of the slide lock is missing, but the lock still functions. The main handle side says "SOUTHTOWN RESTAURANT - 7400 SO. ASHLAND AVE." It also becomes the latest example to be added to my collection. It is a VALLEY FORGE, one blade, one tang stamp, two handle stamps, 3 1/8" closed, all metal, pocket knife. The tang stamp is the curved or arched style. It does NOT have U.S.A. under the curved or the arched part of the tang stamp. The stamp on the main handle side, is the VALLEY FORGE logo stamp. It has the two letters, "V F" inside of a double circle. The stamp on the other handle side, is also the VALLEY FORGE logo stamp. It also has the two letters, "V F" inside of a double circle. The main blade front tang stamp says "VALLEY FORGE (over) CUTLERY CO. (over) NEWARK, N.J. (over) MADE IN U.S.A." I bought this particular pocket knife and I am posting it here, under this topic, because it is a "cousin" of the Allen Cutlery Company, the Eagle Knife Company, the G. Schrade Knife Company and the other cutlery or knife companies, that manufactured pocket knives of a similar, simple, pattern or style. I previously posted my VALLEY FORGE, two blades, all metal pocket knife, back on Saturday, November 7, 2020 (it is in the last picture, posted below). Overall, this pocket knife is in EXCELLENT condition. It did NOT require any cleaning at all. All I did was wipe it off. I took some pictures and here it is.

This pocket knife now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. It is also the latest example to be added to my collection. It is an ALLEN CUTLERY COMPANY (1917-1925), one blade, 4 7/8" closed, 8 5/8" open, all metal, pocket knife. This is my sixth "ALLEN" pocket knife in this particular pattern or style. It is the elusive pattern or style No. 20, the "Ni**er Chaser." That is NOT my term, see the pattern ad in the very last picture (#10), posted below. My other five, No. 20 pocket knives, have ALL been previously posted under this topic or thread. This pocket knife has two stamps, the manufacturer stamp and the patent date stamp. Both stamps are on the handle. It does NOT have a tang stamp. The manufacturer handle stamp says "ALLEN (over) CUTLERY CO. (over) NEWBURGH, N.Y." The patent date handle stamp says "PAT. (over) JAN-23-17 (over) U.S.A." The blade DOES have an obvious, major issue. The blade does have a very CRISP half stop and it has a very NASTY opening and closing snap. This one is definitely NOT my prettiest example of an ALLEN, No. 20 pocket knife. It is in FAIR condition. It needed a little bit of cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

This pocket knife has one stamp, the manufacturer stamp, on the handle. It does NOT have the patent date stamp on the handle. It does NOT have any tang stamp(s). The manufacturer handle stamp says, "ALLEN (over) CUTLERY CO. (over) NEWBURGH, N.Y." The main blade has an ok half stop with a good opening and closing snap. This is my twelfth EAGLE KNIFE COMPANY pocket knife. My other eleven EAGLE KNIFE COMPANY pocket knives have ALL been previously posted under this topic or thread AND at the link below. The blade has an ok half stop, but no real opening and or closing snap. The blade does sit a little high. Overall, it is still in GOOD condition. It did NOT need any cleaning at all. The other handle side says, "Souvenir - of - Dallas" and also has some graphics. Overall, this is pocket knife number twenty-five, in this pattern or style. My other twenty-four are ALL posted under and throughout, this topic or thread. This is my first advertising or souvenir pocket knife, in this pattern or style, WITH an "ETCHED P. CO" tang stamp, that does NOT feature the 1933-1934 Chicago World's Fair. I bought this pattern or style of pocket knife because it is a "cousin" of the Allen Cutlery Company, the Eagle Knife Company, G. Schrade and the other cutlery companies that manufactured pocket knives of a similar, simple, pattern or style. The blade has a soft half stop with a soft opening and closing snap. Overall, this pocket knife is in VERY GOOD+ condition. It did NOT need any cleaning at all. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures, here it is.

Very recently, my trip to the post office produced this pocket knife. It now becomes my latest example to be added to this topic or thread. It also became the latest example to be added to my collection. It is an EAGLE KNIFE COMPANY (1916-1919), one blade, one tang stamp, 2 7/8" closed, all metal, pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says, "EAGLE (over) KNIFE CO" This pattern or style of pocket knife is a "cousin" of the ALLEN CUTLERY COMPANY, NEWBURGH, N.Y. (1917-1925), the VALLEY FORGE CUTLERY COMPANY, the GEO. SCHRADE KNIFE CO., INC. and some other cutlery companies that manufactured pocket knives of a similar, simple, pattern or style. This is my thirteenth EAGLE KNIFE COMPANY pocket knife. My other twelve EAGLE KNIFE COMPANY pocket knives have ALL been previously posted under this topic or thread AND at the link below. The blade has an ok half stop, with an ok opening and closing snap. Overall, this pocket knife is in VERY GOOD condition. It did need a little cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

(over) NEWBURGH, N.Y." The secondary blade front tang stamp also says, "ALLEN (over) CUTLERY CO. (over) NEWBURGH, N.Y." This pocket knife does NOT have the manufacturer stamp OR the patent date stamp on the handle. This is my tenth "ALLEN" pocket knife that has two blades. My other nine, two blade "ALLEN" pocket knives, have ALL been previously posted under this topic or thread. The main blade has a very crisp half stop, with a nasty opening and closing snap. The secondary blade also has a crisp half stop, along with a nasty opening and closing snap. Overall, this pocket knife is in VERY GOOD+ condition. It did need a little bit of cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is. The last picture posted below is of the various pocket knife patterns offered by the ALLEN CUTLERY COMPANY.

Good.addition, Skip, thanks for posting. I would assume that you would have the premier collection of knives from Newburgh(?)

Incidentally, I have seen more than one ad for these knives being sold by a St Louis firm located in the Victoria building. Intertwined with the history of Alan Cutlery is the fact that they were sold out of a building which was designed by Louis Sullivan, one of the premier architects in the growth of this country. Unfortunately, the Victoria bldg was demolished some years ago.
