An original Wharncliffe blade has a straight edge with a gently curving spine that comes to a sharp point, has a full flat grind and is of 'stout' stock. It was intended as the master blade of a whittler with the 2 secondaries being of thinner stock.
The blade on the Northwoods could be called a Wharncliffe if you prefer a loose definition that includes tweaked Wharncliffes.

I suppose the Northwoods blades could be considered "modified Wharncliffe"...or maybe they're modified Sheepfoot blades? Hmmm, not sure which...looks like we might have to go with Sheepcliff after all. (But, let's be clear, they're true Sheepcliffes, not modified Sheepcliffes!

)
Glad we got that sorted out.

Well, i do have a couple more Northwoods with Wharncliffe or Wharncliffe-like blades. The pen knife & whittler have true Wharncliffe blades.

Outstanding KJ,

Ahh, a purist. Let us not sully the past with present day rhetoric. Maybe we should refer to them as I prefer to refer to the non-Hawbakers, "in the style of the Hawbaker" or if you will, "In the style of the Wharncliffe". It does get tedious though when you have "Wharncliffe" frames and "Wharncliffe" blades although as I understand it, it is not required for those to be paired.

I think the greatest thing about knives is there are no absolutes and the worse thing is there are no absolutes. Asolutely makes things interesting , huh?

bighomer i agree. The only reason to have definitions is so that the other guy can know what you are talking about. But knives come in all shapes and sizes which makes nomenclature a challenge; e.g. should "Wharncliffe" only apply to the original design ? or any blade that is similar ? You can take your pick but we must not fight over this because it's not worth the energy needed.

Here's one that I like a lot. GEC Executive Whittler

That one is drool material T.J. I cheaped out and got the white acrylic. I wanted the stag but couldn't afford it. The 89 was the first GEC pattern I fell in love with.
This one in Pumpkin Patch was my first one.

I bought it from CollectorKnives.net for pretty cheap IIRC. It was listed as an EDC.

Just sold this genuine stag #89 (for less than I originally paid for it, which is not unusual for me). Of course, it didn't have the "patina" on it when I first got it--most of GEC's 1095 steel does not do well in my salty, humid climate.
It's definitely a cool pattern, but the handle was just too slender for me to get a good solid grip on...made it a bit tricky to open.

Really sweet showing of wharncliffes QCut

..... Great to see them still being made as a traditional pattern with some tweaks in some cases but all very cool

I just got this Custom Wharncliffe, or modified Wharncliffe. The maker is Ras Venter and is from South Africa, I know little to nothing about him. A quick Google, showed that he is Old School Knife maker, he doesn't use any CNC machinery or special tooling, everything is handmade in his workshop. I fell in love with the lines on this one. The Convex curve is perfect from blade tip to the back of the handle, and the Walrus Fossil Scales are just icing on the cake.
Maker Ras Venter, Pretoria South Africa
High Gloss Walrus Fossil Scales.
Steel 154CM
Rockwell Rc 60-61
Made in 2010, Pretoria South African.
Wharncliffe Blade
3 7/8" closed.
6 7/8" overall.

Great looking knife Gary. The grind at the tang reminds of the new grind that Case tried back in the 80's for a bit.

Practically every wharnie I see screams, "Buy Me!" Resistance is futile for I am addicted to Wharn.
The Queen Amber Carved Stag Bone Swaybelly has an interesting etch on the pile side of the blade that I had never seen before and didn't know what it meant...until I found out quite by accident. Has anyone ever seen this etch or know what it means?
