All About Pocket Knives

Well, compared to my Barlow collection it's kind of pitiful. I am very fond of each one I've acquired, though -- this holiday season the red 'hoss whittler will be riding along pretty much throughout, and I routinely work the "pocket-worn" one into the rotation. Its original owner did a quality repair job on the pile side handle and I have no qualms about carrying it. Takes a little more effort to make it hair-shaving sharp but it's a good'un for EDC as well as carvin up wood blocks.

I'm eyeballing another Bertram, a 253DS in FAT stag, online tonight.

This is one of my favorites, A Nice AW Wadsworth, Great Snap and Nice Vintage MOP.

Case Preferred - that Wadsworth is a beauty. I really like that old MOP!

Tony - our cats love to help when I am photographing! As far biting the blade: I have a sword leaning in a corner in my over the garage man cave. No sheath. One of our cats has to try its teeth on that sword blade just about every time it comes upstairs. Cat aside, those are some nice whittlers. I am also a fan of the Case Seahorse. That Puma you have is very similar to a Robi Klass half whittler that I have. I wonder if they came out of the same factory in Germany? My Klass is 3 7/8" closed, blades identical to yours.

Mel, I think you may be right about the origins of our wooden whittlers. I put the big Puma up against my little ruler when I was photographing the whittlers and I recall it being slightly under 4" in length. I wasn't being particularly precise but it definitely looks right. I saw a mint version of my Puma go on the 'bay for some obscene amount of money (north of $200, IIRC) which gave me a little bit of a surprise -- I had jumped in with a $50 bid and I thought that might be a little too spendy for the knife. It's pretty neat if there's another version, thanks for sharing it.

I can see why you like the stag on that one - very nice! I like the reverse side best.

Just went back through the entire thread. Not sure why I never previously offered any comments? Lot's of great whittlers posted in this thread. Here is my rag tag accumulation of whittlers. Started out thinking I wanted to collect whittlers, but just couldn't get into carrying one. Switched to 2 blade jacks as that is what I prefer to carry.

Seconded about the IXL Wharnie whittler, and that's a great collection of NKCA whittlers too. Have you stumbled across the Klaas NKCA Museum stag reverse-gunstock whittler? I (foolishly) let a minty one go about a year ago for a price I'd gleefully pay now if I could ever find it. Been kicking myself ever since.

thanks for the comments, guys. Tsar Bomba, that certainly is a hefty looking Hen & Rooster! I have handled on of the NKCA Klaas stag reverse gunstock whittlers as a friend has one, however, have not had the opportunity to pick up one myself. Joe, beautiful Schrade!
