I picked these 32 short blanks at a gun show yesterday thinking maybe I could use them to test fire the little Stevens 32 rifle without spending more for a box of shells costing more than I paid for the gun. I tried 3 shells and they wouldn't fire, but the gun did make a good mark on the three shells. Does that indicate that all the blanks are probably too old to fire? The blanks are 32 shorts and the gun says 32 long, but would that make a difference on blanks so as to make them not fire. I'm only out $10 for the shells so it isn't a big deal for them not to work and the full box of old Winchester 32 blanks do look kind of cool themselves sitting up there on my shelf. Does anyone have an idea how old this box of shells are? ____Dave

I somehow picked up a bug for small caliber single shot rifles from about 1900. I know so little about guns except I know what I like when I see it. I thought this was a .22 when I gave the guy $110 for it at a gun show along with $90 for a nice Stevens 410 single shot. I did good on the prices but the 32 is considered a wallhanger because shells aren't available except for really old ones that are expensive and unreliable like the blanks I bought. I would have bought it anyway and I do like having one that I feel I can hang on the wall in my office and not have to worry about walking away when I'm gone. I have several family heirlooms that I keep in a safe along with my deer rifles.____Dave

Dave that cartridge box may be from the '20's or earlier. The blanks shouldn't hurt that rifle if you manage to get one to fire. Sort of like the 22 short vs 22 Long Rifle cartridge.

You need to find somebody with similar interests that also reloads 32 long cartridges.
There might be a difference in 32 Long Colt and 32 Long S&W.
I love those old Stevens falling block rifles.

The .32 long dj has is likely a .32 long rimfire, not a reloadable centerfire. You can reload the rimfire shells with patience but it's a bit more hassle than it is worth IMO. I have read about folks converting the block over to centerfire and shooting .32 S&W long through them. I have a break action rimfire I am in the process of converting to .32 S&W long. Everything is done except cutting the chamber, I am waiting for the reamer to arrive.

Some leather I made today. I got tired of the elastic ones wearing out and I like to have extra shells close at hand for my break actions. I still need to make a few more, just got worn out before I could get them done. I made a couple slings too but still need to make more of those too; a nice wood & steel firearm with a leather buttcuff just don't look right with a nylon sling on it.

A little firearms ID test.
It's not hard. Some are obviously simple. Others easily answered just by eliminating all the obvious wrong answers.
But, there are a couple that might keep you from getting 50/50.
I did 48/50.

Charlie,
Interesting test, I wasn't sure about the Maxim gun but it looked familiar so I guessed right, 50/50.

Took a while for the some of the pictures to load, I guess that's my DSL slow speed internet

I got 49 out of 50. I missed some modern hand gun towards the end.
I wonder why John Browning was referred to as "infamous" in number 21.

Today was the day...
All the scatter guns were passed on to a later generation. Springfield 67F 12 gauge, J. C Higgins 20 12 gauge, Winchester 12 12 gauge and a Stevens/Savage 311G .410 all were handed to my grandson who turns 18 in a bit over a week.He thinks he got them all but he didn't ask about rifles.
Muhahahah!!!!

50/50: Too much time spent reading gun zines. I would have been lost if a photo had 4 black semi-autos, non Glock.
