Classic American pump shotgun, the perfect gauge, and a poly-choke! ::tu:: All right down my ally! It doesn't get much better than that. Go get em!

My model 12 is a 12 gauge chambered for 3" and I really love it. When I went overseas I left it with my best bud, Vern, and he used it while I was out of country. When I came back the first thing we did was go out hunting and he had bought a model 12 for himself. What he liked most was the lack of a trigger disconnect so that shots could be fired just by pumping the gun while holding the trigger depressed.

So off we went to blast some bunnies or pheasants catching up on things with conversation. We came to a fence so Vern handed me his gun, climbed over then I passed both shotguns to him and followed. We'd only walked about 50 feet when a pheasant kicked up and flew off in fornt of us. Both of us lined up on him but no shots were fired...the pheasant glided across the field and landed about 1/4 mile from us.

"Why didn't you shoot?" asked Vern.

"I tried to but couldn't find the safety!" was my reply while I kept inspecting my trigger guard to see where the heck the safety went to.

"Me too." says Vern and then we both saw it. My model 12 had the safety on the trigger guard. His model 12 had the safety on the backside of the receiver....we had accidentally swapped guns.

Great thread this!! Just as most other threads here at AAPK!! ::tu::

I opted for my screen name since I am interested in firearms from Sako from Finland and I have accumulated many over the years. I also have a few Sako branded knives so thought that was a good nick name.

Anyways, here are some of the Sakos I have owned over the years, all sold and gone but not forgotten! :(

They are all great lookin', I'm especially drawn to the one with the Mannlicher stock. Do you recall what it was?
There is some beautiful wood in a couple of those in the 1st picture, #4 and #6 from the left ::tu:: .
Find it odd none have 'scopes. ::shrug::

I have a soft spot for folding guns, I have owned several over the years and regrettably sold most of them for some reason or another, I wish I had them all back. Seen these on You Tube, Walmart sells them for $99. They need a ton of work out of the box in my opinion to make them "right" but after some work they are decent guns. The long one is factory configuration, with some work you can make them fold all the way and even shoot (yes the 12 ga on top did not even fire out of the box!). You can leave the barrel long if that's your thing but since the mod choke only patterned like an imp cyl I elected to shorten it to make it a nice compact package and have screw in choke tubes installed. I always wanted a single shot with a straight English grip so I did that to the 20 ga. Since the photos I did a rounded semi pistol grip on the 12 ga and still got it to fold almost completely flat. I cut the barrel on it too and also removed the vent rib on it and am in the process of lining the barrel to 45-70, I will of course be adding some iron sights to this one.

In factory configuration they shoot about 12-14" low at 25 yards because the closer the rib gets to the muzzle the taller it gets lol, I never seen anything like it. I had to go to two walmarts and go through at least a half a dozen to find two that had ribs that weren't crooked and stocks that weren't cracked. After a full days work they do make fine little single shooters though! And they even got walnut to boot, nice to see on such a cheap gun.

Very cool MM. Who makes them? Looks like they'd be great little truck guns.

As to lining the 12 gauge to 45-70, is there anything else involved in the conversion? Extractor etc...? Is pressure a problem? I ask because this kind of stuff fascinates me. I'd live to see pics of the project.

They are imported under the name Hatfield, they are made in Turkey, a shotgun almost identical to this was marketed under "khan" several years ago, may be the same people, quality was about the same but price was higher.

Pressure should not be an issue with "trapdoor" loads (405 grn bullet at 1400-1500 fps) the liner is being made by a reputable fellow who has been making them for a few dozen years so I'm assuming he knows what he's doing :) I'll just be installing it. I am still kicking around ideas on extraction for the conversion. I could go all out and rework the extractor which would be the preferable option, or a relief cut in the edge of the chamber when the brass could be plucked out with your fingertip, crude but it works. The plan though is to have the existing extractor work as intended even after the conversion.

It will likely get open sights installed, I don't really want to scope it but that's still an option. Either one will require D&T of holes in the 12 ga barrel which will basically be a shroud over the 45-70 barrel.

I have the 12 ga all chopped up right now and it weighs 4 l lb 14 oz. The liner will probably weigh around a pound and half so when it's all said and done it should still be under 7 lbs, light enough to manage but heavy enough it won't knock you around too much. I know right now with 12 ga hunting loads recoil is stiff.

If this goes well I plan to buy another 20 ga and line the barrel on it to 45 acp, I always wanted a single shot in 45 acp for some reason. extraction will be a little tricker on that one since it's a rimless cartridge. I have debated whether to do some YouTube videos on the projects but seeing as how one is complete and the other is over halfway there I guess I won't. Maybe if I do another a video series may materialize.

Awesome. That's what I figured, but didn't want to assume. How are you going to secure the liner? I saw Larry Potterfield do something similar with green locktite. Said it was permanent. I don't know.

That 45acp sounds real neat. Or even a 10mm....oh the possibilities.

Treefarmer, thanks! ::tu::

Well those two you mention have stocks made of scorched arctic birch. This was done until early late 40's when Sako started to sell guns to Firearms International in the US. You guys craved better wood and other improvements which was a turning point for Sako.

The Mannlicher was a .222Remington and had only been fired 5-10 shots since the early 50's.

The reason for no scopes is that this is the last pic before I packed them all up and shipped them to Australia. ::teary_eyes::

Yes 10mm would be neat, pressure may be a bit too much for this receiver though, it would be better to go with something rated for a higher pressure cartridge, all the guts inside this thing are cast and soft so it would likely wear the action prematurely.

I'm still debating on the installation method, I'm leaning towards silver solder but have read and talked to a lot of people (including people who make and reline barrels for a living) that use Loctite or similar products with no problems whatsoever.

Going off memory 12 ga is around 11,500 trap door 45-70 load around 18,000 and 10mm is about 35,500. Higher than that of a 44 magnum. It may hold up, I know a lot of folks shoot 44 mag and 357 mag barrels on case hardened H&R SB1 frames that are used on their shotguns (all except the 10 ga mag) and they all hold up fine to the straight walled pistol cartridges. I would not be concerned with catastrophic failure resulting in injury but it would wear the action prematurely, possibly to the point of becoming useless. I know some folks who were experimenting with rechambering handi rifles to centerfire magnums years ago experienced this. Basically it wrecks the gun in a matter of a dozen or so shots (sometimes less)

I wonder what happened to them after they arrived in Australia.

Seems to me that Stoeger Arms used to sell Sako rifles.

Charlie, the whole lot went to a collector I know. Even though I miss them all, I am glad they are being well cared for, in a good family down under.

You are right, Stoeger did sell Sakos. Firearms International started importing them late 40's and did so until 70-71 when Garcia Corp took over took over. Late 70's Stoeger took over and distributed Sakos until Beretta bought Sako in the year of 2000. Actually, Sako bought the majority shares of Stoeger Inc allready in 1994.
