Lots of folks try to pull the slide back with their off hand. Instead, hold the slide with the off/weak hand, lock strong hand elbow at strong-side hip and push through with the strong hand on the grip, using lower body strength to do the work (turn the hips). Just be sure to keep the muzzle pointed down range. I've successfully taught women (including my sister who previously insisted she could not rack the slide on any semi-automatic) this technique. The website I referenced explains it best.

Thanks Ken. I'll take a look at that. We've tried about every hand hold etc...that's possible. On a good day she can do it. The problem is with MS you just don't know when a good day will turn bad.

She can handle the spring on the 9mm Glock, but that 22lb recoil spring it takes to make an officer size 1911 run is just a bit too much.

I loaded it up for her and she shot the first mag out of it. She can sure shoot that thing. I'd hate to be on the receiving end of her shooting!

Wish I could find something (guess you have to look). For me, my Glock 19 is a bear. And getting that 15th round in the mag is a chore too.

Yeah, we use a mag loader for the Glock. Those Glock mags are a bear to load.

There are all manner of hooks etc... to put on slides makeung them easier to rack. None looked like anything we wanted to hook onto a concealed carry gun. YMMV.

We've tried those techniques Ken, in good days they work, but when the MS flares they don't. In later research we found that the Glock set up really works well for lots of people with MS hand weakness. I think it's the lighter spring of the 9mm coupled with that big square slide of the Glock.

It was one them things I couldn't pass up neighbor, figured it would fit that ole 38, didn't really need it but for 3 bucks what the heck.

I picked this up a couple years ago in a knife trade. The gun is a .22, don't know the manufacturer. The watch it can with was junk, I bought this Elgin that I think is pretty nice to put on it, I'm going to call the etch on the back the "Wyoming bucking horse". I think the chain is possibly hand made.

Nice watch! The factory that made the movement is long gone. The factory that made the case is also long gone.

What watch was on the chain originally?

The watch that came with it was a New Haven. I know nothing.

New Haven went out of business in the mid 50's. Their watches were what was considered "dollar watches" and weren't built very well and didn't last very long. My dad bought one when he was a kid and it quit running a few minutes after he'd wound it. He said he got mad and tossed the watch down the sidewalk. When he got to the watch it was running and it ran fine until it was wound down. He couldn't wind it back up because the stem broke off when he tossed it.

Some people collect dollar watches and you might be able to sell it on eBay but don't offer free shipping. Probably cost more to ship than what they'd bid!

Not much of a history lesson, really. You could probably learn a lot more just by Googling New Haven watches.

If you ever have reason to have that Elgin watch cleaned or repaired have them pop it open while you're present and take a pic of the movement. It should be inscribed with a serial number and, possibly, dates and initials of people that worked on the watch. There's an online database of Elgin watch serial numbers so you could find out what year that one was made and what model it is.

I have two Elgin pocket watches myself. One was my fathers which he got as a highschool graduation present. The other is an old key wind made in 1870. It was either my great grandfathers or my great, great grandfathers watch. Those who would know are no longer with us so...it's just an heirloom watch surrounded in mystery.

I've just finished packing up for my last bird hunt of the season - three and a half hour drive to Wadesboro, going to use my old 16 gauge Model 12 today. This is it for hunting season, until Turkey season begins in April. OH
