A quick question about the common Ulster USA Official Scout knife (round shield). Some have a brass central liner while the one I just picked up has a steel central liner. Does this indicate a specific age or ??

MT-V, I'm showing my ignorance but they used steel during the WW2 I think on some knives but I have no idea about that one. Interesting.

Received this book yesterday. VERY informative and very well researched. I don't think there's a scout or scout style knife that isn't described. There is a "used" copy of this book on Amazon for $80+, I got this in MINT condition for $35 with shipping. I originally posted this in "Mail Call" because I forgot about this thread. Anyway, here it is.

According to my new book, the round shield, known as the tenderfoot shield, started being used by Ulster (at this time a part of Imperial Associated Knife Companies) in 1962-1990. I'm still trying to figure out how to properly read this book, so the info I "quote" may be erroneous. But I'm trying.

Great book! Thanks for the info about the shield. The steel center liner is probably insignificant, but remains a mystery.

Hi. I should have been a little more specific. But, like I said, I'm still figuring out how to "properly" read this book.
If your knife has 4 blades/tools, then it is 1962-1990. If it has 5 blades/tools, then it is 1976-1989. It mentions almost
every feature about the knife. Handle material(s), shield, bolsters, bale, blade material, etching, tang stamps, etc. But nothing
about the springs or liners. Anyway, you're welcome.

These round shield Ulster Official Boy Scout knives are relatively easy to find at flea markets etc. They stir a certain nostalgic bond in guys like me.
When I bought this knife I thought it was likely late 1980s due to its condition. Your new book proves I was in the ballpark. With your comprehensive new text you are sure to be called upon to research future AAPK member finds.

I don't "collect" scout knives per se. I will pick up a Camillus 1047, 3 blade whittler if I see one in good shape and priced fairly.

I found this antique Camillus Boy Scout knife recently. It has the early 3 line stamp on all 4 blades. It has some unique features, The punch has a patent date stamped on back Aug 11th 1908. The cap lifter also has Patented Aug 28th 1898 stamped on back. The blade is etched BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA. The back spring for the master blade is extra wide. The punch has been tipped and reshaped.
What are your thoughts?

Barry I've never seen one that old so I don't know what to make of that big heavy duty spring. The patent number on the punch is correct. It's called the Mayer punch. I can't make out the cap lifter. It seems like I recall that unofficial makers were forced to remove the word Boy from their knives so that one would pre-date whatever year that was. Maybe SK will come along and fill us in. Great looking knife.

It also has that all important "catch bit" that allows the main spear to be as long as it can be by shrinking the thickness of the punch.

A really nice old knife.

That wide spring offered lots of room in that well.
Conversely, the main spear was shrunk in width too to allow a long punch. Works both ways.

Camillus made these in two variations , the 4 blade you have and a 2 blade easy opener with ebony wood handles , very hard to come by , both etched on the main blade .
If you look closely after the word America their is a small period shaped box , I believe that is a registered trademark .

I believe these were Boys Life premium knives sold early on in the teens .

I have both variations and I’ll post pictures when I get time .

N W NY, I'm drawn to those as well. I only have one but I can't help but look everytime. If I'm not mistaken I think it was my first 72 (1047). I got it even before I ate after Jerry and got infected. Congrats.
