You're right Tommy! My memory is not too good, I looked up 302 Mitchell, it is a bigger salt water reel.

.....I learned to fish in the '40's with a pflueger akron casting reel and a pflueger metal 4 1/2 ft. rod....I still have them both. sometime in the '50's I started using a Mitchell 300 and a 7 foot rod, I loved it and caught a lot of bass with it, used it for about 10 years. on 2/17/68 I hooked? and landed the biggest bass I ever caught-11 1/2 lbs. my neighbor netted the fish, laid it in the bottom of the boat, it had it's mouth closed, when it opened it's mouth , the lure fell out!!......that did it, I went back to casting equipment!!............ ............................

I have used all of these reels at one time or another except for the little Dam Quick (top right) and the Alcedo just below it. Often times just to see how they performed. I loved using them.
My go to reels were the Zebco Cardinal 4 (center) and the Abu Garcia to its left.

I now use a Pflueger President and a 7' St. Croix rod. When or if I fish anymore.

I appreciate the reels, Joe. It is kind of amazing how quickly reels (and their boxes) accumulate. After trying some different reels I am back to Ambassadeurs. This is one of my favorites.

I like Ambassadors too, Mel. I have limited experience with them. I have two. One for freshwater and this one I have used a few times in the surf. They are wonderfully smooth.

I use an Ambassador 6500 C for Musky fishing...or at least I used to when time and a lack of kids allowed me to pursue the mighty muskellunge!

Here's a pic of a nice size northern Wisconsin bass I took b yesterday, on my daughter's cheapo Gander Mountain rod and reel set up...

I have several older Ambasador reels for the few times I go fishing. I mostly use an old 4500, but have a couple 5000's. My catfishing rig is a 6000c.

....I'm still wondering if anyone out there has an Ambassaduer 5000CDL????............ ...........

Tell me the signifacance of the DL in the model number. I have several 5000C's but not sure if any of them is a DL.

I have four Ambassaduer 5000s, no CDL that I am aware of ... it would have to be stamped on it for me to know since I buy mine used off Ebay. What makes it special?

Nice photo and reel, Joe! I agree they are smooth. I have one 6000 - it sure holds a lot of line, way more that I ever need, unfortunately. I would love to hook something that would rip off most of the line!

Mike, that is a fine bass! I love to catch largemouths, though I have not done any freshwater fishing for some years. Regarding the cheapo reel: last year I landed the biggest fish I ever caught (30 pound redfish) on a Zebco combo that retailed for $20 at Academy. It worked, but I decided that I needed better! When I got this fellow in the boat I snapped a few quick photos and put him back into the water with in a minute or so.

....everything on the outside except the end covers, handle, level wind cover and the wire part of the line guide is 14K gold plated, they came in a teakwood box with spare parts tube, wrench, etc. also had a sterling silver plate for the box cover for engraving. I think they only made about 200!!................ .......................

The DL must stand for DeLuxe... Mine are all garden variety I believe.

Daddy used to really be in to collecting them, has dozens of them, all different models, parts, etc. I'll have to tell him about that one.

ambassaduers are the only reel I'll use catfishing. I have three 6000B and one 6500C . All spooled with 80 lb spiderwire fusion on heavy action ugly sticks. I can bulldog about any cat in my fishing spots, too much debris in the water here to fight them much or they will get hung up on the bottom.
Those bait clickers ROCK!

I have maintained for many years that the 5000C was the best and most reliable bass fishing reel. Certainly is my favorite.

This was a few years ago. We weren't catching many fish that weekend, but a weekend with my 3 boys camping on one of the many lakes around here is special even without a bunch of fish. Of course it wouldn't hurt either.___Dave
