Thanks, Roger & Joe,
This sale had a lot of old knives that were old tang stamps. Most had a lot of rust that I am in the process of cleaning off. I cleaned the active rust from these today so sent these pictures. There are more to come.
Thanks again,
Tom

This LaClede seems to be a fairly rare stamp - a least it's the only one I've ever seen. Can't find much about it but I'm thinking it pre-dates 1940 when Shapleigh bought out E.C. Simmons. Nice little two-blade EO jack with long pull master. Some blade loss, appears prior owner sharpened the screwdriver blade, but otherwise in great shape.

Good old knife, mumblepeg. Alvin Sellens book on Keen Kutters says Laclede was used, by Simmons, on various typed of merhandise, including pocket knives from about 1935 to 1939.

Here are some comments from David about the knife,
As you well know many knives were not manufacturer by company name that isstamped on the tang. This knife is a prime example of that. Hardware houses would have knives imported from Germany and England stamped with America sounding names in order fool the customer into thinking they were buying an American made product. Buy American was popular near the turn of the century too as it is today. Remember the tariff laws were suppose to oversee these imports and collect additional fees. I wrote a good review of the Tariff for Knife World and in the GEC book. Some knives were restamped upon arrival and some prior to shipping to avoid tariff fees. Phili was the home to several hardware houses that distributed throughout the area to retailers. Supplee had the Pennsylvania Knife Company. A closer examination may reveal the construction to be from England. It doesn't seem to have many German attributes to it, but I could wrong and remember each county had a number of small manufacturers that we may never be able to reveal. Nice knife and rare stamp, I owned only two in my 40 years of collecting. Hope this helps.
Mike
The more I look at that knife the more I feel its German. Look at the large pins and bolsters. They used large bolsters cause the nickel was cheaper to use than the bone or ivory handles. Please adjust my comments.

I know this is not a knife but these are a few of some knife blades I bought not long ago, they are marked B or S Richardson Philda!! I have not been able to find anything out about the company. David thinks it was a horticulture company??

Nice blades Mike - and 2 wharncliffes

... Interesting to me that one is etched American Knife and one other Diamond Edge... I can be wrong but I think as noted above by David (your post Mike) some german (and I guess british) manufacturers stamped their blades to represent them as american-made knives, and in particular I read Philadelphia as being one of the locations that were used... I can be entirely wrong but the fact that one was etched "American Knife" and the other reminiscent of Shapleigh's "Diamond Edge" TM also brought this to mind... anyway nice that all the blade tangs were not even "punched" (not sure drilled is correct

) for a pin... cool find!!!
(Edit - Mike - confused your name with David's quote - now corrected

)

Mike I'm pretty sure Richardson was a hardware supply.I think I ran across that name during my research on A R Justice.

Here' one I've got on the way A.R. Justice tang stamp. Since he used the Battle Axe Cutlery Co. stamp on his contract knives I'm Wondering if he actually produced this one or perhaps it was before he came up with the Battle Axe name.

Nice looking Pearl knife, Greg. I have never seen that Tang Stamp. Thanks for posting.
Here is my small collection of old Platts knives. The 1st is the oldest, a C Platts & Sons of Eldred, Pa 1897-1900. The others are from Androver, NY 1900-13 but have varying tang stamps.
Thanks for looking!

Justice probably produced that knife before he got married.
