All About Pocket Knives

I used to say pickbone,an early form of getting handle grip on bone,but I am now not sure what the term pickbone signifies.

It does indicate an early knife,whatever it is.

Joe, some great old bone on that one, also I love the cap bolster on those ticklers. Very nice.

Here's an old Schrade Cutlery Co. with some pretty nice jigging.

That is some beautiful jigging, Joe! Nobody has ever been able to duplicate the way Schrade jigged these handles back then.

It really is amazing work. I've never fully understood the process of jigging years ago.
I remember seeing some contraption that was used, but I was confused by it.

Yeah, most of the machinery back 80 years ago was full of millions of springs and other tiny parts. Pretty shocking that they could ever get those machines to work properly at all. Course with no TV and barely radio, there was plenty of time to figure it out.

I just came upon this post and that is one awesome set of knives and I couldn't notice that that one IXL Farrier's knife looks exactly like the one I just got with the same shield. I now think that I have an affinity for jigged bone and stag.

I just found this thread and thought I would contribute. This is an early simmons knife with an unusual mismatched pattern to both sides of the knife. I first thought it to be stag, but the handles appear to have a "reddish" dye look. any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks

Look at the front side of the knife, sure looks like jigged bone to me.
The back side, i am not so sure, looks more like stag.

Dale, that was my concern also. Are you thinking rehandle? I'm new to Simmons(keenkutter) and this one has me puzzled.

I'd say that both sides are stag. Is it red stag or was it dyed?

As I look at the top and bottom edges of the front scale, I would have to guess that it is dyed. But that is just my guess. It is my understanding that back in the day, bone was referred to as "stag", so it is very confusing to say the least. But I appreciate all info, thanks

How can a 100 year old knife look so beat up and still have bone handles like these?

It doesn`t look that beat up, just lots of blade wear, someone liked that knife
