All About Pocket Knives

thanks Ken, Tim and Larry, I have a few more case I will post here
this is the club I joined here in VA, it started in 1976 and the knives are always good quality
the first knives were $17 and worth much more now, I paid $64 for this years 17 out of 25 and that is what they go for on the classic case site without club ID

Great lookin scales on that club knife also! I like those pinched bolsters too.

My grandsons both have birthdays coming up pretty soon. One the middle of September and the other on the first of October so for their birthday present this year, I decided to get them a pocket knife made in the year of their birth and settled on Case Trappers. I picked up a 1997 Case 6254SS for Dakota last month and a 1999 Case 6254SS for Jayden last night (Sellers picture on this one).

Jerry, that is a great gift for your grandsons.

I like any XX with greenbone handles. Some will bring more than the tested patterns. Nice find!!!

I bought a 64052 today. It's not a real nice knife but it is good for a carry knife. I mainly wanted it because it is a transition knife, which I didn't have. The main blade is either a 5 dot or a 6 dot, it's hard to tell. It looks like 6 to me but it could be some kind of stamping issue. I have a picture of it. The other blade is a 2 dot, making it a 1978 knife.

It seemed unusual to me that so many years elapsed between the stamp marks. If any of you guys are into transition knives, I would like to know what span of years you normally see.

That's pretty neat. I've not encountered a transition knife so I checked Steve Pfeiffer's comments on the pattern 052. He states in a paragraph concerning blades from different years, ".....and with various "dots" combinations during the 1970s and the early 1980s for the 64052. Transition models are scarce." (from page 182 of Collecting Case Knives)
Sounds like you have a keeper . Makes sense since it has 2 stamped master blades.

I have seen the 2 to 5 dot transition models in the 64052 before. It is puzzling that the blades were "leftover" in 1975 and not used til 1978. But I have seen other examples.

Hi All......... The transitions I have are mostly USA to !0 dot 1970. Being a 10 dot collector,
it seams that is what I see the most of. One thing strange is the "fly fisherman", a lot of
people call them 10 dot, when they are USA to 10 dot, I have 1 and seen a lot more. What
is hard to find is the straight 10 dot, with 10 dot on the hook removal blade and 10 dots on
the master blade,I saw 1 that James Parker had on ebay, some how I let it get away!

I have a XX to USA 88 Pattern or maybe it is a USA to XX, I don't know how to tell the difference. Are they rare?

In my opinion, the older stamp is listed first.
So it would be an XX to USA.
Or a USA to 10 dot ...etc.

To be alittle more specific, Robinten gave a great desription on another post...

"For future reference , the stamp on the master blade (the blade on the right when looking at the knife on the shield side) determines the nomenclature . For instance , if the master blade is stamped CASE XX USA and the secondary blade is stamped CASE XX , the knife would be a USA - XX transition and if the master is stamped CASE XX and the secondary is marked CASE XX USA ,it would be an XX - USA transition , etc. ..

I would not call them rare personally. Scarce, yes. Books for twice value of a straight USA to USA. I believe Steve call the transition 88s "scarce" in his book.
