All About Pocket Knives

Very cool

What a bunch of great knives there are in this thread!! Wow!!
Here's one you won't come across everyday, looks like they were only in buisness for about a year. Ca.1918 Enderes(Albert Lea, MN) sleeveboard whittler with genuine tortoise handles. Well used, but still goin' strong! Not sure if they were a manufacturer or had knives made on contract. Any ideas?

WB, Goins says Enderes had three factories in Albert Lee Mn. making small tools and cutlery. The cutlery marked Enderes, Gutenberg, Iowa were contract made. That is one beautiful knife WB!!!. Slim

Thanks Slim, great info! This one isn't stamped Gutenberg, Iowa, so I will assume it was made in Albert Lea, MN. I like tortoise handled knives, but sure don't come across many. Hard to believe knife co.'s didn't use more of it then they did.

Here's another fairly obscure one, I think. A Race Bros. lady's pen knife with really nice horn handles from the 1880's. Can't find much info on this one either. Not even a city (or country) of origin. Whatever it's origin's, the fit and finish are top of the line and it's in pretty decent shape for being roughly 130 years old.

Thanks! It's my understanding that it was used either for buttoning up those tall shoes the victorian women wore, or for pulling on their gloves. I've always refered to them as button hooks.

It is a button hook and it appears to be a quill knife. Are the handles horn or tortoise? K-nice K-nife

Thanks TJ! I've always heard 'em refered to as button hooks, until recently. There was a few posts in another thread awhile back that seemed to lean towards the idea that some were "glove" hooks, while others were "button" hooks. I'm not sure what factor distinguishes one from the other. I think you're right about it being a quill knife, it has the basic shape of one, although small compared to most. It's only 2-1/2" closed, kind of a cute lil' feller!
Anyway, the handles are horn. They have alot of nice color that didn't come out real good in the pic. I actually store it in a real small ziplock bag to help avoid the bugs gettin' to it.

And of coarse, one in my favorite pattern.
Both have the Made in U.S.A. stamp.

Hey G-Dogg, I have a couple of 'em. Cracked ice and red. I'm also watching a pair of 'em with the Walt Disney/Davy Crockett handles on Ebay. I think the only other color I remember seeing them in, is black. Nice aquisition!
Beechtree, thank you! The toothpick was one i'd had on my want list for several years. The Barlow was just a lucky find. Walden Knife co. made a top quality knife, but weren't in buisiness all that long. If you havn't already, check out their history, it's a great read!

That is a great old Bean knife. At one time, that blade was etched too. I believe that was a contract knife made by Schrade.

Here are a couple of hard to find knives. Lever Cutlery Co Brooklyn NY. The knife with the Gold Handle is a sheet of Gold pressed onto a metal handle. The black handled knife I think is Gutta Percha. I have seen a Napanoch with the same levers to open the blades. More info is on page 165 of the latest Goins' Cutlery book.

Santa brought this to me. 17 inches of awesome vintage knife. Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. Well over 100 years old. A new treasured piece for my collection or as my son says. His inheritance LOL

David that knife is in remarkable condition given its type and age.
