Good eye! It's still a beauty though! Still a thumbs up! I am still thinking about putting nice wheels on my '79 Ford. They are so rusty that sometimes the bead doesn't hold air. Wonder what the original knife looked like before PT?

Steve, if you also carefully examine the top of the blade where the thumb grip grooves are cut in that the edges of the grooves are rounded off. On these early Case knives those grooves were very sharp on the edges, sharp enough to skin yourself on. On this knife the rounded off edges show that a lot of metal was removed in the cleaning/buffing process. The brass spacers look a little wide too, but when one sees different spacer groupings one has to see the red flag go up.

Tongue, hard to say what it began life like. Could easily have been a more common leather handled one. I myself (not condemning others' ideas) can't give a reworked knife a real thumb's up because where does that leave the guy with a similar knife in full original condition? There has been a spate of re-handled old Case hunters on the bay for the last couple of years, a whole lot being sold by a guy in Indiana I think. All done in stag, many with spurious spacer packs and some even on models that were not offered in stag when new. I think that guy must have sold over thirty refinished re-handled with stag Case hunters, maybe more.

Thanks for the education, Gene. I know very little about CASE knives so it is great to hear from someone who does. I can talk a little about Schrades, both early and late, but not CASE.

I did notice the grooves on the spine weren't right after going back to look again after your email. I went the last Sargent's to look at the spacers and saw what you saw on the knife in question. Each side mirrored the other.

I agree with y'all on the rehandling and polishing of the Case but I do have a caveat on the thumb grooves being worn.

That wear MAY not be from the cleaning process. That "wear" may have been deliberate by the original owner if they were as sharp as Gene said they came.

I had a Microtech Currahee one time that had thumb grooves like that - almost sharp enough to shave with. After I scraped open my thumb for the 3rd time, I took a spindle grinder to it and ground of the edges of the thumb grooves. I finally gave it away as I just couldn't ever get to like the handle.

Pretty generous of you Wayne! Your theory is possible but not so plausible. Those are just too far rounded from side to side and would no longer provide the positive thumb guide they were intended for. Those earlier Case knives had the grooves hand filed or sawn into the spines, the spacing and depth is not the same on all knives, but they do go the same depth across the spine. Brad has one he says you could cut rope with it's so sharp, and neither of us have seen any with such modification. Of course most of Brad's are dead mint with no wear at all, but even the well used ones I see have pretty sharp edges on the spine. Were the rest of the knife original I would say your theory had a chance but not so much with the rest of the alterations and heavy cleaning.

Oh, I agree, that knife has "issues".

It's just I wanted to point out that "wear" us not always the result of nefarious cleaning. Sometimes, it is due to owner modifications, whether they were warranted or not.

30 to 50 years from now, there are going to several tons of Becker knives out there that may be accused of "excessive" cleaning due to "cleaning wear", when in reality, it's going to be because of Beckerheads "making the knives their own". Modified thumb ramps, stripped and polished blades, stripped blades with Kabar laser etches that weren't deepened prior to coating stripping, blade mods, etc.

I got this one in today. It's similar in size to my Arno Bernard. Very unobtrusive on the belt. Looks like another Dandy.
