I scored an original copy of Chic's book on eBay. Looking forward to reading it.

Ah ha. I remember seeing that picture of him with the guns years ago in maybe an Argosy mag. or some other outdoor magazine.

Nice old gun leather - it's the old stuff that I find interesting (although I own modern stuff too). Here are some pictures of an old Stevens Springfield single barrel 16 gauge I bought off of a hunting forum, it's on the way to me now from New England. 16 gauge and just like one I had when I was a boy (except this one is nearly new). I'm holding my long-gone original in this 1970 snapshot with my Dad and Brothers (I'm wearing the gray sweatshirt). OH

Very cool OH! My Pa, the one who's farm I grew up on, never was a hunter. But he kept a Stevens 16 gauge single shot under the bed to dispatch varmints and such as the need arose, along with a handful of purple shells on top of the dresser.

Momma tells a story about the time a young man from another community decided he was going to come over and visit with momma's oldest sister. The young man stopped out on the main road at the country store on his way over for a Coke and to make sure he had the right directions to the farm. When some teenage boys at the store found out that an outsider was coming over to court one of their girls they decided to try to scare him off by telling him that Fred Jones was a mean and crazy man. Why he'd probably just as soon shoot that boy as look at him for coming to visit with one of his daughters.

The young man decided to go courting anyway. But unbeknownst to any of them, Pa had seen a groundhog in the field across the road and had taken the old Stevens and a couple of shells to kill it. Just as the young man pulled into the driveway and stepped out of the car Pa walks up with the shotgun. Momma says it scared the boy to death! He stayed for awhile, but I don't think he ever came back.

My first gun was a Stevens/Savage model 94C, single shot 16 gage.
As a kid I harvested more quail, rabbit, squirrels, and turkey with that gun than I can remember.
I still have it, but I don't shoot it anymore cause the buttstock has a crack in it. it's the bottom gun in this pic.

Had to dispatch a ground hog the other day. Used this coach gun with exposed hammers.

That's cool Blue, our Dad's must have had the same mindset in getting a boy started - one shot, make it count! OH

Just in from the lgs. I brought this one home. Boy howdy does it shoot. It even makes me look decent and that is no mean feat.

Ruger SR1911 commander size, 45acp. Here's a pic in the truck seat at the lgs. Lol. Better pics later.

I have heard and read some great reviews of your Ruger.

OH they're hard to find right now. My lgs ordered one for a guy and were lucky enough to be able to get two from their distributor. Best part is it was almost $300 less than what Ruger lists as MSRP. I snatched it up as quick as I could. I really like the balance of the commander size 1911's. I bet that old commander of yours was a fine handgun.

Steve, I haven't gotten that far yet. I'm still working on that.

Colonel Wade, thought I'd found one a couple of weeks ago, but it was chambered in 9mm Para. Keep us posted on what you think as you get it shot in. My two favorite hunting rifles; the bolt gun is a 270 WIN, the lever is a 308 WIN - both built by Winchester in 1963. OH

Colonel, nice Ruger 1911! I'm not familiar with those yet but usually, Ruger doesn't mess around and bring a lot of value for the money.

My only 1911 is a Kimber Custom Eclipse... first year. I picked it up around 16 yrs ago. It's a full size 1911. It's very accurate for a 1911. Typically 2" - 2-1/2" groups at 25 yds with my handloads.

On the shotgun side... my best one, is this SigArms B. Rizzini sporting clays 12ga 28" tubes Italian made gun. Turkish Walnut, hand engraved, inlaid gold... beautifully crafted. I've only ever shot trap with it but it works really well.

CheckSix: Don't know for sure what the finish is on your Kimber but it looks terrific.

Colonel26: I have always found the Commander size .45s to be the best balanced of the species in my hands.

CheckSix: Concerning the Rizzini, I had to get a roll of paper towels to wipe up my drool.

Thanks guys! I got lucky about 15 yrs ago and got the Rizzini as a used salesman's sample, for $1500.00. Last I saw, B. Rizzini when they last had it for sale a few years ago, it was $10K. I've shot a lot of trap with it... never have found a sporting clays circuit to try it on. I've shot close to 300 shells through it in one day at the trap range and it is very comfortable to shoot.

My second best shotgun, is this SKB made, Weatherby Orion Grade III 20ga with 26" tubes. It is the perfect bird field gun! Lightweight, fast to point, easy to shoot. They all came with XX Fancy Claro Walnut. I've had it to the same trap range and I get the same exact scores with it as I do the Rizzini. Usually, 23, 24 or all 25 birds broken per round.... depending on my ability at that time.

I deleted the stock photo from last night and took some snaps of mine this morning... and if any of you sharpies noticed, yes! it is in a Browning shotgun hard case. It was the only hard case I could find that fit it exactly.
