Nice! Glad you got to fire it. They're not as bad as the imagination of what it is like. That's a Barrett 82A1 rifle. It's the one I would own, if I ever bought one.

Thanks Royal.

Thanks Dave. Appreciate the ID on the gun.

Still waiting on the video.

Here is best video I could find as far a concussion. Like Dave said, recoil is actally minimal. Way less than a 30-06 for example.

Unfortunately, my experience was not with that girl in the video...

See second half of video.

I thought so also David.

Here's my new long-range target I paid quite a bit of money for.
Love how it came out but I'm a bit unhappy as to the weight. He estimated 75 pounds. It sure ain't 75 pounds. That said it'll likely hold up forever.

Jerry,
Ain't that awfully large for those little, itty-bitty, tiny groups you shoot at a million yards?

Should'a made it smaller so it was actually 75 lbs.

WOW.
Hey Jerry, is that thing a 1/2" thick? You better invest in a wheelbarrow, Pard. ::woot::

It it 3/8" 450 steel. I was thinking man size vs. Moa when I designed it. I asked him several times about the weight. He even pulled out his calculator and calculated to 75 pounds.
The fabricator does work for all the gold mines here repairing or mining equipment so I figured they would get the weight right. Very likely indestructible but pretty damn heavy. Little bummed out since it cost me five hundred bucks. Difficult and carry by myself but I can. But if I'm going out shooting long-range will likely have a spotter with me anyway to help carry the darn thing.

with only 3/8" steel You'll probably punch lots of holes through it.

Using 450 AR steel? From what I understand, not likely. It's not soft Steel. But I guess we'll find out won't we.

Well, went range with a buddy today to test my new target. Really don''t care if I punch a hole in it. I bought it to shoot at so I did. My buddy offered to bring out a 12 gauge with slugs and I told him no problem, but he opted not to for whatever reason.
Anyway, we tested it out pretty good. I don't own a 44 Mag or a.50 AE but I highly doubt they will go through this target at close range. Not sure how much they'll even dent it either.
We basically shot everything at this from 22 to 45 caliber. All from close range. The only caliber that made a slight indent you can only feel with your finger was from my Sig 10 millimeter running SIG 10 millimeter 180 grain flat nose jacketed. 1300 fps as I recall. You can see where the flat nose was slightly and I mean slightly indenting the steel. That was at 10 feet and most of the rounds shot or within 21 feet. We even shot some FN 5 7 ammo at it that this supposed to be AP. 357 Magnum not even a dent . All the handgun rounds that were copper jacketed the jacket ripped off and the lead splattered in every direction parallel to the target. Take a good look at the pictures and you can see how the lead splashed out away from the plate.
In other words, lead was splattering and it actually cut a line in the dirt lateral to the target all the way from the berm to berm on the range.
I decided to shoot a 556 AR 15 round at it to see what happened. I was a little surprised after all the testing I did it made a pockmark although very slight in the steel but nowhere close to going through at 50 yards. You can see the pockmark dead center on the pic where there's white paint.
I'm sure with a large enough caliber and the right projectile you can punch through it. But it seems to be pretty bulletproof from my testing. Especially given the reasons I bought it, close range pistol, long-range 308. Had a great time rapid firing at it from different distances with my pistols.
Crazy windy here this weekend so I'm not sure I'm going to get to test it out but I'll let you guys know if it gets marked up when I move to 400 600 800 yards
I named it Mo for now. Subject to change.

Would a hand truck work to move that target?

Looks like a well thought out unit.

Thanks Steve. Hope life is well my friend.

Yes, hand truck was my first thought.
The issue I need to work out is loading in my 2006 Rubicon LJ by myself. It is the rare extended version but I designed it where the head of the silhouette goes between the seats. I'll figure something out to load it up on myself but for now it's a heavy sucker. I stepped on the bathroom scale which is digital. I weigh about 175 and when I put the target on with me my scale freaked out.
Likely use a hand truck for getting it to where I need to be but as I said, most likely will have someone else with me if I'm shooting that long to spot. But I do want to be able to move it by myself.
Regardless, I'm pretty happy with the results thus far and certainly no holes punched through as of yet after hitting it with some heavy rounds
Regards my friend, Jerry

ken98k: Thanks for posting this. I had not seen it reported elsewhere in the news which surprises me. What I find impressive is the overall efficiency of the response from the spotting of the leak by helicopter to the evidently fast and efficient ground response. As for the shooter...what a jerk. ::doh::

What???? It's not as good as they say? No wayyy!

Seriously, I've considered buying some of that to seal asphalt driveway cracks. Nothing else works that well that I've tried so far. I mean what the heck, if you can make a boat from the stuff it should do the crack thing too.

This happed back in 2001.
My point was to illustrate how light 3/8" steel can be easily penetrated by a hunting rifle with off the shelf ammo.
Thickness of the Alaska pipeline wall: .462 inches (466 miles) & .562 inches (334 miles).

Ken,

Easily penetrated???? At what range was the shooter? What projectile was used? What grade steel is used on the pipeline? Are you suggesting the shooter used off the shelf ammo? Was it a ...
.338 Lapua,
.338 Federal
.338 Remington Ultra mag
.338 Norma
.338 Winchester mag

How many grains was the bullet? That affects velocity and energy at a given distance does it not?

By the way, I am an outdoorsman and hate seeing trash in the field nor do I really enjoy hearing of oil spills. So let's take that off the table. This moron had like 40 prior arrests for who knows what according to the link. Won't personally be sad if he never see daylight again.

Yes, I agree with you. 3/8" steel can been punched thru given a whole lot of variables such as steel hardness, caliber used, projectile used, range from target, hand load "HOT" versus of the shelf, static target like mine or does it move when shot, etc, etc. You cannot say that a steel plate will be damaged in the least without consideration of these variables.

Here is my additional point. Your quote following is certainly a "blanket statement" not considering my previous points...

Reread my previous posts on intended use, review after shooting, etc if you like. Please point out where I said 3/8" steel was impenetrable. In fact I said the opposite. I was speaking specifically to the target I built and intended use, not in general as you are doing.

I pulled a couple of holsters out of a $5 bargain box at the gun show this weekend.
One of which was a "Combat Speed Scabbard", made in the 1950s by famous holster maker, CHIC GAYLORD!
Check out the uncovered trigger, lack of a retention strap, and leather flap that protects the adjustable rear sight on my S&W combat masterpiece.

Chic had a one-man holster business in NYC, was an author, and appeared on a TV game show called, I"VE GOT A SECRET.
His SECRET was, he had 13 concealed handguns on him during the show! He invented many of the concealed holster designs that are still being copied today.

Blue that is one beautiful holster. I recall an article from long ago. My impression is that NYPD detectives were authorized such holsters [privately acquired] at least the NY Stake Out Squad.
