Tom, thanks for the kind words. The '78 will be carried on special occasions.

JMH58, that's a great prize. I've yet to add an Explorer to my collection.

Very handy little tool John. ::tu:: The nice part about it, it was free! I've been finding myself reaching for a magnifying glass more and more as my old eyes lose traction, and to have one attached to an everyday carry would be totally convenient. Congrats on the win! 8)

These two arrived at my house today: a Case Sod Buster Jr. with a CV blade and a Sears fish knife. Thanks to tongueriver for the fish knife! The Sod Buster Jr. has my initials engraved on the blade...sometimes I'll go to odd lengths for free shipping.

The Sod Buster Jr. got its first test when making a wrap for the Sears. When the piece of old T-shirt I used was folded over, it cut dang near as good as a serrated blade (as long as the fabric didn't catch on the tang)!

I like both of those colors.

My new pick-ups, all Trappers: a pair of crimson peach seed jigged bone from this year, and one from 1978 (the year I was born). Big, big thanks to knifeaholic for the '78!

Very cool, Dan! You got your '78! I have a few that I collected, because it was the year I graduated high school. That will be a forever keepsake you have there! ::tu::

Nice Böker trio. Were the differences in colors and patterns planned?

These three arrived yesterday. Two Case Trappers in peach seed jigged Kentucky Bluegrass bone (the one on the bottom will be a carrier), and a Trapper in barn board jigged antique bone. The antique bone one completely blew my mind!

Rick, that Boker line up is beautiful.
Dan, those three are hitting my sweet spot. Love green handles and I love barn board jigging. You do a great job on pics.

Yes indeed they do. I'm contemplating the purchase of another so I have one to carry.

Thanks Dan. Yes and no. I bought the blue Boy Scout in October, 2018 and I had always wanted to get the Junior Scout which is the next size up but at $160-$180 they were too pricey. I finally got the Junior Scout a couple weeks ago because I found it for $100.75. There was only one more size left in the Scout series so I wanted that one too and I just received it yesterday.

The colors were chosen based on price and practicality but the patterns were gradually planned.

A few things:

A modern Mercator. I wanted an exact replacement for the roughly 3 7/8" version I had, but the full size lockblade Mercator was easier to find, and the same price.

While Otter purchased Kaufmann in the 1990s, nothing really has changed quality-wise, and they're still made in Solingen and affordable to the average workingman. And that's great. My smaller slipjoint version (currently it is sold with Mercator tang stamps as a UK-friendly model) is exactly the same fit and quality-wise.
KIMG4147.JPG

Only real difference I see is that the old one has a red fiber backspacer, while the new one has a black nylon plastic backspacer.
KIMG4148.JPG

A lot of assorted "Cigar cutters and such" from the store here.

Cigar punch. I have no use for this. But, I wonder if I can repurpose it as a punch for leathermaking.
KIMG4158.JPG
Unmarked, all-brass, ornate cigar cutter.
KIMG4152(1).JPG

Madre-Du-Toilet Seat handled fixed cigar punch. This will come in really handy as a small marlinspike.

KIMG4155.JPG

A very old cigar cutter. Advertises National Cigar Stand's 5 cent Black & White cigars. I am actually keeping this one--it will go with my old church keys. I don't drink, I don't smoke, and those who do so don't bother me. Oh, and I find brewing and winemaking fascinating. I collect old church keys, but not sure if I want to get into old cigar cutters. I already own a few old cigar boxes I use for storing some knives.
KIMG4157.JPG

Two knives with cigar cutters built in. Only markings are "SHEFFIELD STEEL", and one has what I presume is the Christian Cross and a crown on it. Both are really low-quality knives. I suspect "SHEFFIELD STEEL" has the same weight as "SOLINGEN STEEL" on a Pakistani or Chinese knife.

KIMG4153.JPG
KIMG4154.JPG
KIMG4157.JPG

Unmarked Bartender. There may be either a short blade, or perhaps a foil cutter that has broken off. Looks old.

Now, the stuff out of this lot I meant to buy it for. The razor knives will be used, but the multitool will go to the collection. Or not. Really nice layout of tools, but this is like the third I have seen over 5-6 years. There's a new one on ePay for $35 that even includes the original vinyl pouch.

Valet Auto Strop Razor Utility Knife. When men began to shave with safety razors, the grandfather of the ubiquitous boxcutter was born. Originally marketed by razor companies as nifty reuse for spent blades, they are still a really good design today--and slim! People were asking $10-15 EACH for them, and I couldn't see it. Obviously, no one makes carbon steel razor blades anymore. While I could swear they were still making Valet single-edge razor blades, I can't find single-edge razor blades that A: do not have the metal crimp along the top or B: are solid without a hole cut in the center. One of my used Feather double-edge blades broke in half won't work. The knife advertising Cudahy's Puritan Hams still has a (sharp) blade, while the one without advertising is missing a blade. These will be used, but they're not a strong as a modern locking utility knife.

KIMG4150(1).JPG

Gitsknife by Gits Razor. Advertises some company by the name of "Morehead" in Detroit. Says replaceable blade, but it's an odd-sized single edged razor blade with a hole in the top. No doubt, a proprietary blade for their razors.
KIMG4151.JPG

And finally, a very unusual multitool, advertising Firestone tires, but made by Latama of Italy--who here is known for automatic knives, but they were a US-based importer who seems to mostly have produced inexpensive advertising knives. I knew I had seen one of these before.

Here are the functions I can recognize.

File
Nail Cleaner
Slotted Screwdriver
Glass Cutter (or perhaps a type of wire stripper/cigar box opener?)
Scraper/knife blade
2 1/2 inch ruler
Cigar Cutter
Bottle Opener
Scraping arc (built into cigar cutter
Wire Cutter (at very end of tool--folding file blade allows it to function as a pair of cutting pliers).
KIMG4160.JPG
KIMG4159.JPG

Oh, and I found this original catalog page a seller included with an old eBay listing that had sold. The "glass cutter" is actually a nail puller, and the scraping notch is non-existent--just a part of the cigar cutter. $2 in the '50s was like $20, so not exactly super-cheap.

I got this knife in yesterday from Roland, kj. I couldn’t stop thinking about this knife once I saw it. I kept ignoring the post for days hoping that someone would take it before I caved. I finally reached out to Roland and it was still available. This is now the nicest knife in my collection. Custom Joel Chamblin Gentleman’s pen knife, or half whittler to me. The pearl on this is exceptional. I have seen a lot, A LOT of pearl handles but none compare to this one. I have never seen the shades and hues of blue that this pearl has in it, my pictures don’t do it justice. It’s simply elegant. The 14kt gold pins and shield are over the top. I wish I knew how he put those rounded headed pins in that pearl with no deformation. The blades are 154-CM stainless steel. The liners and bolsters are 416 stainless steel. Simply an exceptional knife. Thank you Roland for giving me the chance to own this beauty.

Gorgeous knife Mark. ::tu:: I'm glad you're so pleased with it. The MOP on this one is simply stunning. I believe they get the pin heads so round and uniform by peening them from the liner side instead of the MOP side, and they were pre-formed so only the 1 end needed peening and then they were dropped into the pin holes. Congrats! 8)

Thanks Mark for explaining how the pins are fastened. I’m sure this takes a lot more time and effort, especially with pearl.
Thanks TMK, I hope to keep this one my entire life. Maybe someday I will give myself permission to carry it and use it, but I doubt it, it’s just too nice.
