I have heard the phrase in baseball 'ducks on the pond' referring to players being on base. We got a ton of rain last night and I was out walking the dog this morning past the little baseball field in the park across the street from the house. Much to my surprise on the infield there were duck on the pond.

I've heard of rain delays in baseball but never a duck delay.

Great picture! Those ducks are resourceful. Last week I saw a similar sight. While driving through Oklahoma I saw mallards in some shallow standing water in the drainage ditch alongside the highway. It had rained the night before but it couldn’t have been more than a few inches deep.

Have had a couple of Brown Thrashers visiting for a couple of days. Can't tell if they will nest.

QS, I don't see those around here. Hope they stick around for you. Thanks for sharing.

QS they probably will if you have any bushes or fence rows or something close to the ground. I've got a burning bush and they raise in it every year.

I had a pair of rare visitors at my feeder station just now. A male and female Rose Breasted Grosbeak blessed me with their presence. According to the map in Peterson Field Guide for Eastern Birds, they really shouldn't be here. I'm glad they stopped by nonetheless.

Holy smokes Phil! What a visit. Congratulations. My bird book [Kaufman] range map shows that in summer there is a thin arm reaching down into eastern Ky. Not by us but almost along the eastern state line. I'm thinking that since you have a pair, they may not be passing thru but are going to breed near your house. Certainly hope they do. Wow.

Heard a curious sound coming from the front room of the house. Investigation revealed this Brown Thrasher tapping the window reflection of himself. An opportunity for better photos.

These two showed up again this morning.

Very nice Thrasher photos, QS. Brown Thrashers are one of my favorite birds. Back in the last millennium, one of the things that I loved about still hunting was how the Thrashers would start calling just before dark. Then when it got really dark I would hear the Thrasher flying away through the bushes to it's roost. Once the Thrasher flew away it was night - time to go home. I am fortunate to have a few living in the drainage area behind my house and I can still listen to them calling just at dark, albeit with a lot more traffic noise than in the old days out in the woods.

Phil, Rose Breasted Grosbeaks are rare in my area too. Every few years I will see one or two passing through on migration. I

Noticed the Wren has at least one little one hatched out in the Bird of Paradise planter: For several years we have been aware of hawks living in a Pine swamp north of our house, never could find the nest until the hurricane blew down a lot of oaks on the edge of the swamp. I don't have a camera capable of getting a good picture of the hawk setting on the nest, I put a white circle around the nest so at least y'all will know what tree it's in.
