Why did you remove the Ti coating ? I understand it is supposed to decrease friction when slicing and to block oxidation of steel. Is there a down side ?

I wanted it to patina like all my carbon steel bladed knives,I prefer that look ,plus once it's got a patina it doesn't rust much more ::tu::

My new Rough Rider Splitback Whittler arrived today. Since I’m going to use it for whittling, I spent a while turning the pen blade into a mess - then the mess into a wharncliffe blade.

Looks good to me, aught to cut off some nice shavings. I like the new blade profile.

That wasn't wasted time. Love the blade. That is just about perfect.

Thanks Keith and Dogleg. I had the chance to use it a little yesterday and it did real fine. That modified blade is going to make a fine detail blade!

I like that modified pen blade, Greg. I have one of those whittlers in my tackle box. I never use the pen blade - not that I dislike pen blades, but I always open the clip.

Another anonymously gifted (bombed) RR. This time a Muskrat, fine knife as far as I can tell, as is the anonymously donated RR Trapper I used last year during deer season. Just fondling this one, I noticed the mark side blade tip is sitting a tiny bit proud, enough to feel so a slight adjustment with a file on the kick will remedy that. The pile side blade is well below the frame. Everything else is top notch, beautiful bone too!
My old red, white and blue pride always gets in the way when I handle one of these RRs. I still love to see USA stamped on the tang! Y'all Rough Rider aficionados will have to forgive my prejudice.

I know exactly what you mean Philip but I keep buying them. I'm such a hypocrite. ::facepalm::

Well, considering that the average non-knife-nut might buy a couple of pocket knives in a lifetime, I would say everyone at AAPK is still waaaay ahead of the curve on buying USA made knives, no matter how many Rough Riders you *also* buy...

Rough Rider is a USA company whereas some of the China made knives come from businesses that have no USA connection other than an importer.

I haven't been able to figure out how they mounted the handles on this one. Probably quite simple once you know how it's done but a genuine puzzler when you don't know.

Hmm - I'm not sure I would call them a US company. They are a brand owned by SMKW, right? SMKW imports them from China. I very much doubt that SMKW owns the factory. So, in that regard, SMKW is just an importer.

Jerry - that is an awesome design! Do you know if they have other patterns (like, for example, a peanut?? :) ) with those handles?

I think what KJ was getting at, is when an American company has something made in China, they are in charge of the quality. As opposed to just importing stuff made in China. Buck is another good example, their Chinese knives are top quality.

Make no mistake, high quality stuff can be made anywhere in the world. Just being made in China doesn't mean it's junk, anymore than being made in USA guarantees high quality.

Besides the mini-trapper, the only one I've seen is a 3½" lock-back.

eveled, thanks, your clarification is exactly what i was trying to say, and there must be at least a few Americans employed to oversee the design, ordering, distribution, accounting, etc. There are enough RR knives to keep a few people busy.
I bought one of the single blade RR's like Jerry shows in post above, about 7 years ago (long ago anyway). The quality is not up to the regular RR's and i wonder if they were made by a different manufacturer.
