Lyle - Thanks for posting those fine knives! I have seen photos of farmer's whittlers before, but this thread is the first time I have seen the name. That custom rooster comb is beautiful!

You built up your fine collection and now the knives are just coming to you.

Great stuff Lyle!!! That custom is beautiful WOW Charlie is the best and once again has done a great thing.

More gorgeous knives, Lyle! I really like that checkered ivory, that would make some sweet looking pistol handles as well if the material was wide and long enough.

Thanks for posting those Just,the bone on those Schrades is some of my favorite,and the profile of the Schrades is most elegant.As I've said before, Empire and Schrade are the only makers I've found that put the pivot pin in the meat of the bolster on the heavy working pruning end.

When I posted the well used example like this,I explained how rare this pattern is. ( with the rooster comb [bark lifter] and flat blades) I have only seen pictures of 4. Rich Langston has a worn one and the picture of the one in the Schrade factory collection,I am blessed to have the other two.One I posted previously.

This one is unused, etched Peter Henderson and Co,and with a bar shield,I feel very blessed to have gotten it.I really like this one.

Lyle, (a.k.a.King of the Farmers Jack).In my opinion that Schrade with rooster comb blade and etch is the star on top of the farmers jack tree you have assembled.Well done my friend.

Congrats. on the H. Boker! I know you have looked long & hard for one and they are scarce. I have only seen a handful of them over the last few years and you sure managed to find a NICE one......................now should you ever want to sell it, I may know someone that would be interested

Also, that last Schrade you posted up is about as good as they get. VERY NICE knife!

Super knife! But what do you mean by bark lifter? I did not realize that the rooster comb had a purpose. For grafting buds, maybe? The arcana of knife lore keeps surprising me.

Mel ,you are right about the budding and grafting. I'll let Schrade explain. Tina,a high end German(still making these blades)budding and grafting knife maker calls it a bark lifter,Schrade called it a bark loosener.

Ain't no thing Lyle. You got the 's' removed from 'https' but occasionally there's more to be removed. I think I told you about the '&' and anything that follows it but until you posted the link to this video, I didn't know there is also a '#' that can show up in the URL which needs to be removed including everything that follows it. (marked in red above).

Your collection of Rooster Comb knives is just mind boggling. Before today, I didn't know they were a pruning/budding/grafting knife and that knowledge makes your collection just that much more astounding. There couldn't have been a lot of a specialized tool like this sold over the years. Realizing that, my respect for your collection increased by a factor of ten.

Lyle - thank you for the information. When I was sixteen I worked on a nursery for a summer. I did not do grafting, but I recall an older man doing it with knife about like a sodbuster. If I ever saw a roosters comb I do not recall it. Very interesting blade.
