How long is the knife?

It is 3 1/2"

Great looking Northfield npeters3 ... great looking shield and what one may consider a boys knife in style - at the larger end of boys knife but fits all the classics of the pattern - really nice

Very nice Northfield! There is something about an original Northfield that makes me want one more than any other vintage brand. There are plenty of vintage brands with interesting histories but something about Northfield just really pushes my buttons for some reason.

I thought seriously about buying that Pearl Northfield that Steve posted a few posts above but somebody snagged it before I made up my mind. I don't own any vintage Northfield knives and I don't plan to start collecting them but I would like to have just one.

When the right one presents itself I'll snatch it up this time.

You're right Joe ... sorry I didn't see that and thought it was a barehead in the posted photo until you mentioned it - I increased the lighting in the picture and saw the tip bolster - still may be on the boys knife end but a barehead is a no brainer for me but have now seen enough cataloged boys knives to know that not all were barehead jacks... funny because a boys knife can be somewhat open-ended which I hope came across in that article - over 3 & 1/2" is a cutoff for me but other attributes like a tip bolster were no doubt used though the majority were barehead jacks...

What a great whittler Joe! .... you know I'm a sucker for those celluloid handles! Lots of other great knives posted also....

In response to the following post of pictures of homes in Northfield and to add to the lore.

I can't attest to all the homes here but house number 5 was my childhood home, it was the original post office and was not part of the housing for the employees. Houses 3 and 5 were my neighbors and I dont remember the history of them. I dont think house 5 had anything to do with the company. Across the street from house 3, is a home of significant importance to the story as this is H. Gills old home. Behind a house that is not pictured here is the remains and where Northfield Knife Company operated until 1965ish with all the same machines and forges from down by the pond. I have pictures of the factory when it was moved. I have held a couple of the Worlds Fair awards and read a ton of ledgers, bills, orders and letters from Military men thanking the Northfield Knife Company for the knives in WW2.

House number 7 is not the Platt house although it looks like it. The house that the Platts lived in was what we call the "Pilbin house" it was taken down and placed in a storage by the state and sold for a dollar back in the late 90s. The land that it sits on is now the new location for the Northfield Fire House. (I could be wrong but this was the house I was always told was the superintendent house, until H. Gill)

Another thing to note; the old community store (Not General store) was located across from the new fire house and adjacent to the current basketball courts, there in the woods remains the old foundation. This store was turned into the original location for the firehouse before it got moved the second time to Main St.

I wonder if it was you, rubi04tj, who I met up in Northfield. I was shown this award and others and some straight knives that day.
That had to be about five years ago. We were in a workshop/garage area. We had a nice conversation. Thanks again.

No that wasn't me, but more than likely a member of the family as it has been mentioned that someone came and saw some of the items.

Very nice Joe, good looking MOP, especially for its age!!!

"Northfield KN Co." 3" shadow whittler, pearl. All 3 blades are marked the same with "KN" for 'Knife'.
I think this is an early marking for Northfield, before 'UN-X-LD' was used, but i am guessing, no actual info on this.

Thats a beauty of a Northfield KJ ... I am not sure myself when UN-X-LD was first used on Northfield knives..
