All About Pocket Knives

Here is a couple of Kutmasters with different tang stamps, but the same as others in this thread.
I like the muskrat. These are 4 inch knives. Dates?

Does anyone know the manufacturing dates (and range) for the large (4 inch) Kutmaster Stockmans? I've looked around this site and did some googling but no luck in finding any manufacturing data. Would love to find an old catalog or price list! Thanks, TDcase

These are the only two Kutmasters I own. But I too am like the others, not being able to tell you much about the company and their knives. Bull

Got this Premier Stockman for Christmas. I'm very impressed by the fit, finish and craftsmanship. The picture doesn't come close to showing what a fine knife this is. In the picture it just looks plain. It's not.

Bull... we had a real good one! Had Christmas at home with my grown kids and then the wife and I visited her parents and had a great time. If you have been having issues with the knee, the replacement may really help you out. Hope it heals quickly for you Give a shout when you are able..... Later bud... TD

I took a flyer on this ebay knife. From the picture, it looked pretty rough, but I put in a low bid and won it. In hand, it looks a lot better. I cleaned it lightly, oiled it and took this picture which shows it in a better light. Utica made and still makes some very nice knives.

TDcase, Well, it's a little past 6 weeks and the knee is healing real well. Hope all is going well with you and your family in this new year. The Doctor gave me the go ahead to resume driving, so now I can get around a little bit. Woke up twice during surgery, once the saw was cutting the joint, then another time they were hammering the new titanium joints in. Was able to get to an estate sale ( my wife drove ) this past weekend and picked up 3 knives. One of which was this Utica Kutmaster serpentine jack. The scales are a tortise shell celluloid material. It needs a little bit of work done on the clip blade, but not a bad little knife. Take care TD! Bull (Dale )

edgy46, Thank you much for your comments. The main blade does need some work though. Someone at sometime had used that blade to make an electrical contact. A little work on the stone will straighten it up. Dale

Don't that just give you a bad pain in the belly when you see a good knife that someone did that to? I got a Case USA 1965-69 era 6254 Trapper in a trade once that someone cut into a hot line with. It blew a good sized "U" shape in the edge of the Muskrat main blade that was so bad that there was no way it couldn't be taken out. Both blades were full too. That made me want to At least if it would have been the secondary spey blade a replacement blade would have been easier to find. With a little work you can take most of the damage out of the blade on your knife.

I am glad to hear you are out and about on that new knee. I think Utica/Kutmaster made some really good knives, but never reached the collectors fame like some other names. I have read that they made a lot of knives on contract, and I suspect some knives they made are more valuable, when they have someone elses name on them, that didn't make them? Ward's is one that comes to mind. I have read that they were made by Utica and Winchester. I am posting a picture of this one, because it has an arced spot in the pen blade too.... I think this one was a Winchester made knife, but I am not sure.

Aimus, your right on the money about that, somebody wouldn't think any more of their knife than that. Words of caution, Don't loan your knife out, it might just be that somebody!! Bret, the knee is getting better each day. Today is my last for out patient therapy. I am walking up to a mile a day on it now. I really don't understand why Utica/Kutmaster haven't been a real collectors knife. I own 2 now, and they're a very solidly built knife. By the way, that's a very good looking knife you've shown. Those jigged handles look good. It's a shame someone had to arc that pen blade like that. Bull ( Dale )

This is the only Utica Kutmaster I have. An unused little pearl handled job, 2 13/16" closed. Don't know how old, but a nice little knife.

Help me out here folks, from what I've been exposed to, and that isn't a whole lot, I find the Kutmaster to be inferior to the Utica. Any thoughts on that?

You may be on to something there Joe.
Sort of like Camco being the less expensive line from Camillus.
It is not that they were inferior quality, just not as nicely finished and did not have the top of the line handles, etc.
I can't recall off the top of my head ever seeing a bone handled Camco, they were usually a composite of some sort.
I don't know if that applies to Kutmaster though. Does anyone have a bone handled Kutmaster?

Joe, I think you are right, and I am betting Dale's comparison to Camillus/Camco is spot on. I will keep an eye out for bone etc. handle materials, but I can't think of any we have.

According to Goins, in 1937, the trademark "Kutmaster" was first used. Eventually this marking replaced all other markings.

Yes, they made bone handle Kutmaster knives.
