The abbreviation "No for the Latin "numero" was commonly used as paper was expensive so numerical lists used abbreviations. No one seems to know how the Co evolved. The French form is Cie. (Just some idle research on a cool and cloudy day). O'.

Thanks for the info Ridge. The use of abbreviations back then makes sense. Also heard printing was expensive in the early years of printing.
