A few videos of various Microtech OTF models being hammered through 2x4's (and lots of other abuse). Not only did the locks not fail, but the knives still functioned afterwards.
I've never owned a Microtech, or any OTF, but I was impressed.
Video 1- Hammer test at 4:24.

Very interesting,
Thanks for posting. It certainly makes one feel more confident about quality OTFs.

I’ll say one thing. If you guys pull a knife out for the reason I think you’re carrying one,you got bigger ones than I! I carry a snubby.
The world could end on the way back from the grocery store and people might have to defend their Honey Nut Cheerios and Spaghetti-Os from hordes of starving Instagram influencers. That is not the time for knife failure!

Actually, there is a torture video comparing a Microtech to a Chinese Microtech clone. Even though the clone failed to function after a certain amount of abuse, it still took a good bit before it failed.

The YouTube torture vids on microtech are good. Would like to see comparisons to other brands. This thread has me again considering an OTF.
Since this is my thread I'll risk derailing it with this observation. It seems like modern-manufacturing of knives is producing crazy sharp blades compared to 20 years ago. To me Case has always made sharp knives from the factory but others not so much. Maybe I was just poor and bought cheap crap but all the Case, Benchmade, Boker, Kershaw, and ZT that I've bought this year are absolute razors. Thoughts?

Hi Guys,
This thread has been helpful and I'm definitely leaning toward a new OTF as an EDC. Which would be my very first OTF. I've always liked the concept but been hesitant for many of the reasons discussed here.
My regular EDC is a small fixed blade and I will continue to carry that, so the OTF will be a secondary knife for smaller/lighter tasks. I'm working on a deal for one now and if all goes well I will post a dedicated thread to share not just the knife but my experience carrying it.
Either way, all good fun and have enjoyed everyones input..
Cheerio,
Roy

Smitty!
Since the models you elude to are meant for stabbing not cutting, naturally they arrive dull, on the other hand you'll find that MOST knives meant for cutting will likely arrive sharp, clones or not. The key word being MOST.

To all concerned, ALL threads on AAPK are for EVERYONE, and permission to post is unnecessary nor warranted.
If you're a member here, post away wherever you like, but do try to stay on topic.

All of the stabbing knives from China arrived sharp. I don’t know about you but I like a knife sharp. Who wants to be stabbed with a dull knife?

Please explain.
You said "the models you elude to are meant for stabbing not cutting, naturally they arrive dull"
Why would knives meant for stabbing be dull? A knife meant for stabbing must also be sharp, doesn't it?
Daggers and dirks are usually double edged, both sharp, meant for stabbing.
I don't understand what you mean.

If you have ever stabbed a living creature you know it’s what you do with the blade after you stab. It really should be sharp! The stilettos we buy are to collect for the most part. They are safer dull in a lot of hands.

O.K., I assume we're on the same page regarding what knives we're talking about, Chinese autos, right? When they make a clone they're assuming us foreigners want our knives sharp and don't likely consider what use the knife is for. I have little doubt that much thought is put behind what we're using our knives for, other than for roaming street gangs running around blatantly stabbing each other.
Just from the nature of the blades on such knives, dagger, bayonet, spear-point it's obvious to me that knife will be used for stabbing something, and since all those blades come to a sharp point and that sharp point will easily start penetrating whatever is being stabbed and will continue penetrating from the force applied by our pushing it in, it makes little difference if it's edges are sharp or not. Even the blade on a butter knife will continue to penetrate, IF you can somehow manage to get it's round dull point to break the skin and begin the penetrating.
I have daggers and stilettos from all over the world, and all it took was one glance at the knife for me to realize it's purpose before I bought it, and the less expensive models came with one or both edges dull, whereas the costlier models all came with both edges dull. I mean, can you honestly say that you look at an AKC swinguard and think, "Hmmm, that would be a great knife for harvesting veggies in my garden"? By the same token, can you look at a Case Trapper and think, "Hmmm, that would be a great knife for stabbing my noisy neighbor for playing his stereo too loud"?
To address your questions gentlemen, I too like a sharp knife for cutting things, Smitty, and I make a point of staying away from situations where I could get stabbed, with a sharp knife or dull knife, or any sharp object for that matter.
Regarding dirks and/or daggers, David, the only such knives I've seen or own all have dull edges for reasons explained above, a couple of them even came with triple edges, but YMMV.

This is likely where our differing opinions come from, Smitty, I've never killed or watched anything being killed, I only accumulate my sharp/dull knives.
EDIT: This statement is not entirely accurate, I once witnessed a sea-turtle being butchered on the deck of the boat we were fishing in, and I don't know how the turtle felt about it, but it was so gruesome although over quickly, I was sure glad the sailor used a sharp knife judging by how easily he sliced through all the parts.

If you’re really going to use it,it should be sharp. Not to many people buy a new Latama,Campolin and put an edge on it. If you’re an expert sharpener sure. Not me.
Happy holiday to one and all! Hope you have knives under the tree. Smutty Smitty

Which brings us back to WHY would you even think of sharpening a Latama, Campolin etc., for harvesting your veggies?

No, for running around with a street gang which neither of us will ever do?
Enquiring minds want to know!
