Even when they are 85, it seems like, "Only the good die young."

My condolences for your loss.

Carl I'm very sorry for your loss, but also happy that you were able to share something special with your grandfather. I'm sure it meant the world to him to be able to share his time and interest with you. Prayers for the days to come.

Carl, Thank you so much for your excellent telling of such a fine man's shared life with you. Although the loss is painful, your grandfather's inspiration lives on in you. As a person who never experienced a grandfather, I tell you with assurance what you already know, that your grandfather was a gift and blessing to you not only in this life but will continue to be so into the future.

Thank you all for the kind words. We knew the day was coming for some time, so had many opportunities to be together over the past year. He was ready. That makes it a bit easier, but still is sad. So many memories keep popping back into my mind. I hope I never forget any of them.

Taught me how to drive a stick shift when I was 14. He took me to the biggest hill around and parked the truck 1/2 way up and made me try over and over and over to start up that hill without stalling the truck. I remember him yelling "GET ON THAT CLUTCH BOY!!!" At the time I wasn't very happy with him. Looking back it is a fond memory, and I know he was absolutely entertained.

Another time when I was really young at a knife show, he gave me $20 and I managed to buy a knife from another dealer. And then later that day sold it for a $5 profit at grandpa's table. I was so proud of myself, maybe a bit too proud. He told me "Now that you're making money, you can buy your own dinner tonight". That took some of the wind out of my sails. But I learned life isn't free. I really did have to buy my own lasagna dinner that night. He just smiled.

Hey Rookie, great to hear some back story after seeing all your amazing knives. Very nice to know where your knife history started and blossomed. Very sad for your loss and godspeed to all your family in the loss and hope for some solace and peace in the loss. Sounds like Grandpa was a cool guy, a blessing and then some. Even cooler you guys from different generations shared a hobby and love of blades. My heart goes out to you and all the best. Thanks for the little peek into your lives. Looks like great times. ::pray::

Iโ€™m very sorry for your loss. There is no way around the sadness. It just takes time. You are a lucky man to have had his influence in your life and it sounds like you know that. Cherish the memories and try your best to be that same positive influence for someone else. Thatโ€™s the best way to honor what he was for you.

I pray the Lord brings you comfort and peace.

Carl, I notice in the picture, a Model 78 hunter in the case at your Grand Dad's right hand. They are wonderful and desirable knives. I have one just like it, displayed on a plaque. I'm going to name it the "Bob Siple 78" in his honor and share your story of him whenever someone admires it. I hope this pleases you and yours. John O'Dell
