I'm used to seeing a "12" and "16" on the shell puller bolsters, which look kind of malfitted when I expand the picture. Would you happen to have pictures of the spring and blade well with the blades open? Thanks!
Here you go amigo!
Although I no nothing about this type of automatic knife, I don't think anything this crudely made came out of Sheffield.
You’re right. I agree. India I’m sure. They probably stole the English name because they were under a British control from 1858 - 1947.

That does not mean anyone "stole" the name. Everybody in India speaks, reads, and writes English. There are many local languages also spoken, but English is the language that allows them to communicate universally with one another.

Good point. I should have just said “they used the name”

This one doesn’t say Sheffield or India. 78 is older than most people. I’ll stick with the super old comment. Hobby is suppose to be fun right

It's not hard to figure out how you got your handle, dude, let it go!
You've been given the truth about your knife, which BTW you originally ask for, but you don't seem to want to accept it.
Of course our hobby is suppose to be fun, but not at the expense of posting incorrect information, that's how this forum has remained relatively "knife pure", cuz we state the facts and reject the incorrect.
Your knife is what it is, and isn't what it isn't, as long as you know and accept that you'll have a great time here, fun too!
If you're one of those dudes that just likes to argue, never mind! lol!
Yes thanks MadMarc. I didn’t ask for info on it. I only posted it say it was a well made super old knife. Which it is IMHO. YMMV.
Have a great day!
You're absolutely correct, my mistake my apologies. Carry-on.

No worries mate! You seem like a good guy! That’s what these forums are for. Learning and being friendly. It is annoying when people post wrong info all the time.
Have a good one!

I just think the fit and finish on a Sheffield made knife would be better. Thanks for the additional pictures.

Is that yours? That’s funny. We had a cheap plastic hair brush in my family growing up that had the same horse head on it! Seems really weird to see that same horse head on a knife handle!!

Rare old knife I found last week.
Interesting knife, N-y-w. Thanks for starting this thread: I actually learned a few things from reading the posts here.
By the way, one of the things that makes this forum so nice to visit is its decorum. Folks who have knowledge tend to share it freely, and without condescension. Those who do not read what they want to read are not required to believe or accept.

And these are very well done replicas of a Sheffield Horse-Head knife!
An 11 1/4" Dagger,
and a 9 1/2" lockback,
and even if they were genuine I'd still like Bill's soooo much more!

Here are two more knives recently sold on eBay that try to falsely invoke the appearance of being Sheffield made but are actually not Sheffield made or Sheffield quality. The bogus folding Bowies are much more common than the autos. These knives often use wording like No.6, Sheffield or Superior in spite of what they actually are. I do view the autos as being much more collectable than the folding Bowies.

I agree. This did turn out to be a good thread. That’s what I joined this forum. Lots of good folks here. I will see what else I can share and take some photos.

Hi Gents,
Sorry for my late entry and thank you to all who have contributed. Some interesting knives shared and some great posts and lessons on this thread.
Just to add some general thoughts from my own perspective. I'm a switchblade enthusiast (no expert) but my full time occupation is as a specialist knife historian/dealer (Fairbairn-Sykes Knives). As such I have noticed a marked increase over the last twenty years or so in fake knives coming out of India & Pakistan. I field emails daily from F-S collectors, many of which want to show me "
their latest rare find" and sadly I often have to share the news that their new treasure is fake. Most take it well but some will argue the point with me and try to convince me it's genuine
As such; fakes abound and 'if I may be so bold' - when one seeks out the advice of a well respected expert it's prudent to be open to their reply even if it's not what one wants to hear.
It's a sad state that such fakes should infiltrate our respective collecting passions but it's only by sharing out knowledge, being honest with one another and collectively taking the high ground that our passions can flourish.
Keep collecting, keep sharing and keep learning..
Cheerio,
Roy

Thanks Roy! There are tons of fakes/modified reproductions where anyone thinks they came make a dime or two.
