I'm sorry guys, I made an embarassing mistake. I was working midknights when I made my last reply, I don't know what I was thinking, but I know it is Moore Maker and not Moore Head, sorry.

Yeah, I thought maybe Moore Maker and Indian Head had merged and no one had told me!!

Actually not all 440 steels are bad. 440A has been compared to 420HC and it is used in many knives. But 440C is a premium steel used by many knifemakers today. It was first introduced by Gil Hibben. It is still a fine steel and properly heat treated, a great steel. It is true that my preferences are in D2 steel but I am using more ATS34 now. Of course that began with Bob Loveless and 154CM steel. When the vacuum melt was stopped, Hitachi brought out ATS34. Now 154CM is made the same way, again. A steel discussion is always just under the surface.
